Read:
1. One chapter book OR three picture books of your choosing
If you want, you can combine a chapter book with a picture book.
A graphic novel counts as a chapter book.
If you’re uncertain what category your book will count, just ask!
Picture books are available on Youtube
2. Two relevant blog posts, newspaper articles, etc.
3. One relevant article from a scholarly (peer-reviewed journal)
Journal recommendations: Language Arts, Children’s Literature, Children’s Literature Quarterly, Children’s Literature in Education, Research on Diversity in Youth Literature, International Research in Children’s Literature, The Lion and the Unicorn
You will pursue a topic within children’s literature that is of personal interest. During this week, select and read one children’s chapter book or three children’s picture books (or a combination of the two) from outside the booklist and three secondary sources, one of which must be a scholarly article from a peer-reviewed journal. You will write a research proposal to introduce me to your research question/topic. You should accomplish the following:
1. What topic will you be examining? What questions are you seeking to answer?
2. What children’s book(s), 2 secondary sources, and 1 scholarly article will you discuss? (If you include MLA citations, I’ll be able to check them and it will make your final paper easier.)
3. Why are you interested in this topic?
4. What difficulty, if any, do you anticipate?
5. What questions do you have for me?
There is no format or page limit requirements; however, the more thorough your proposal is, the more quality feedback I can provide.
Remember, you final paper will be graded on how you demonstrate the ELOs. As a reminder, these are:
1. Students analyze, interpret, and critique significant literary works.
2. Through reading, discussing, and writing about literature, students appraise and evaluate the personal and social values of their own and other cultures.
