Different styles may be influenced by factors such as personal preferences, organizational culture, and the nature of the decision at hand.
One commonly used classification of decision-making styles is the framework developed by Vroom and Yetton (1973), which identifies five distinct styles based on the level of involvement of the leader and subordinates in the decision-making process. These styles range from autocratic to consultative and democratic:
Autocratic: In this style, decisions are made by the leader alone, without seeking input from subordinates. The leader exercises complete control over the decision-making process. This style may be appropriate in situations requiring swift and decisive action, but it can lead to reduced employee engagement and creativity.
Consultative: The leader seeks input from subordinates but ultimately makes the final decision. The leader considers the opinions and perspectives of others, but the decision-making authority remains with the leader. This style encourages employee involvement and can lead to better decision quality and increased commitment.
Facilitative: The leader acts as a facilitator, providing guidance and support to help the group make the decision collectively. The leader encourages open dialogue and fosters a collaborative environment where everyone’s ideas are considered. This style promotes teamwork, creativity, and consensus-building.
Consensus: In this style, decisions are made through unanimous agreement among all group members. The leader acts as a facilitator, ensuring that everyone’s opinions are heard and guiding the process toward a shared decision. This style promotes a high level of employee participation and commitment.
Delegative: The leader delegates decision-making authority to subordinates, allowing them to make the decisions independently. The leader provides support and resources but does not actively participate in the decision-making process. This style fosters autonomy and empowerment among employees, but it requires a high level of trust and competence.
To determine the decision-making styles used by management or employees in the video or research you provided, it would be necessary to analyze specific behaviors and actions demonstrated by individuals in the decision-making process. This could include observing the level of involvement, the extent of collaboration, the degree of employee participation, and the level of authority granted to individuals.
In terms of evidence, you can analyze verbal and non-verbal communication, leadership behaviors, the level of employee engagement, and the overall decision-making process presented in the video or research. Look for indications of leader dominance, employee input, collaboration, or delegation of decision-making authority. These observations can provide insights into the decision-making styles employed.
