In this section, we read about the development of the American healthcare system from the 1950s to 1990s, a 40 year period when tremendous change to the American healthcare system was proposed, some of which was enacted, and some of which was not. Using the available evidence provided in this section’s readings, describe how the American healthcare system evolved during this period going decade by decade. Discuss the possible changes to the American healthcare system that were proposed during this period, and the changes that actually took place. What were the strengths and weaknesses of the system that was created? What burdens-financial, social, emotional, et cetera-were placed on the individual as a result? Which Americans had access to the healthcare system, and who was left out?
