Family Tree PAPER Technical Requirements:

1000-1500 words
Double spaced, 12 point font, 1” margins, essay format
Submit to the correct link in Assignments. This uploads your paper to Turn It In, a plagiarism detection device. See plagiarism information under Institutional Policies.
Correct grammar, spelling, sentence structure, etc.
Use quotes sparingly (if at all). If you do choose to use direct quotes, they should not exceed 20% of your word count.
Cite all sources of information in APA style format. You should have at least 1 reference for each disease discussed in your paper (totaling 3 completely different references). For example, if you use the CDC as one reference you need to use other sources for the other two diseases. Include citations within the paper (in-text citations) and a reference page. See APA style guide and tutorial in Canvas for examples.
Students cannot use class notes, presentations, or articles for this paper. New references need to be provided for this assignment.
All information needs to be accurate and from reputable and reliable, academic sources. Reliable sources on information include professional websites (such as American Diabetes Association, Mayo Clinic, etc.), academic journal articles, and books. Non-reliable sources of information include (but are not limited to) Wikipedia, non-professional websites, and blogs.

Introduce the paper and describe what the reader should expect in the following paragraphs
Family disease #1
Rheumatoid Arthritis /describe the disease
Describe signs and symptoms of the disease
Discuss risk factors of the disease (causes)
Describe ways to prevent the disease
Remember, for those methods that cannot be prevented using primary prevention, there are other prevention methods (secondary and tertiary prevention).
There should be at least 4 substantive sentences describing prevention strategies for each disease.

Diabetes type 1 /describe the disease
Describe signs and symptoms of the disease
Discuss risk factors of the disease (causes)
Describe ways to prevent the disease
Remember, for those methods that cannot be prevented using primary prevention, there are other prevention methods (secondary and tertiary prevention).
There should be at least 4 substantive sentences describing prevention strategies for each disease.

Breast Cancer /describe the disease
Describe signs and symptoms of the disease
Discuss risk factors of the disease (causes)
Describe ways to prevent the disease

There should be at least 4 substantive sentences describing prevention strategies for each disease.
Summarize what you learned in a conclusion paragraph.

o Apply what you have learned to your current and future lifestyle choices, including specific examples.

o This is your personal perspective, and should be written in first person.

o This section should be a minimum of 150 words.

Note: DO NOT restate what is said in your family tree or summarize the members of your family in your family tree. This assignment is designed to be a research paper. The purpose of the paper is to describe the diseases present in your family, explain ways to prevent the diseases, and identify what you learned.

I encourage students to talk about each disease independently (see recommended format below). For example, discuss the disease: description, signs/symptoms, and risk factors and then methods for prevention before moving on to the second and third diseases. This will help with organization within the assignment.

0 points – Frequent errors that interfere with communication
