1.    John believes that as a manager, he leads by example. He is by far the best salesperson in the travel agency and believes that is why he was promoted to branch manager. 2.    Michelle loves all her staff members in Qantas telephone sales. She does not see herself as “the boss” but rather as one of the team. Any decisions that need to be made are made collectively by the team. Whilst she has always gotten along with everyone well socially, she has recently experienced some hostile reactions from a couple of the staff in the work environment.

 3.    Maria is the supervisor of a tour company reservation team. She is proud of the fact that she “runs a tight ship” as everyone obeys her instructions and works through lunch or after work if necessary to complete their tasks for no extra pay. Her reservations team of five have a great reputation in the industry. She always reminds staff at weekly meetings that if anyone ever has any problems, they are welcome to knock on the door of her office and she will assist them. Recently, there have been a few staff absences (sickies) and Maria has heard through the grapevine that two of her staff have been applying for other jobs.

ANSWER

John’s, Michelle’s & Maria’s management styles

John’s management style can be described as autocratic or authoritarian.

He believes in leading by example and focuses on his own tasks, leaving little time for staff concerns. While his commitment to his work and leading by example can be commendable, his lack of availability and attention to staff concerns can result in low morale and a lack of support for his team members. To improve his effectiveness as a manager, John should consider the following suggestions:

Delegate tasks: John should identify competent individuals within his team and delegate some of his responsibilities to them. This will not only free up his time but also empower his team members and foster their professional growth.

Active listening: John needs to make an effort to actively listen to his staff’s concerns and ideas. By creating an open and supportive environment, he can gain valuable insights from his team members and address any issues they may be facing.

Time management: John should prioritize his managerial duties and allocate specific time slots to address staff concerns. This will ensure that he is accessible to his team and demonstrates that their well-being is a priority.

Michelle’s management style can be described as participative or democratic.

She values teamwork and involves her staff members in the decision-making process. However, her recent experiences with hostility from some staff members indicate a potential breakdown in communication or a lack of respect for her authority as a manager. To improve her effectiveness as a manager, Michelle should consider the following suggestions:

Clear role expectations: Michelle needs to clarify the roles and responsibilities of each team member. This will help set expectations and ensure that everyone understands their specific tasks and areas of authority.

Conflict resolution: Michelle should address the hostility and tension among her staff members promptly. Openly communicate with the individuals involved, listen to their concerns, and work towards resolving conflicts to restore a positive work environment.

Assertiveness: While it is important for Michelle to see herself as part of the team, she should also assert her managerial authority when necessary. Clearly communicate decisions and expectations to the team, ensuring that they understand her role as a manager while maintaining a collaborative approach.

Maria’s management style can be described as autocratic or coercive.

She prides herself on running a tight ship and emphasizes obedience to her instructions. While her team may have a good reputation, the recent staff absences and job applications indicate a potential issue with employee satisfaction and engagement. To improve her effectiveness as a manager, Maria should consider the following suggestions:

Flexible work arrangements: Maria should assess the workload and consider offering flexible work arrangements, such as flexible schedules or work-from-home options, to improve work-life balance for her staff. This can help reduce the likelihood of staff absences and increase overall job satisfaction.

Recognition and rewards: Implementing a system of recognition and rewards can motivate and encourage her team members. Acknowledge their hard work and dedication publicly, provide opportunities for professional development, and consider offering incentives for exceptional performance.

Communication and feedback: Maria should promote open and regular communication with her team. Encourage staff to provide feedback, address any concerns promptly, and foster a supportive work environment where employees feel comfortable discussing their problems or aspirations.

Overall, each manager can improve their effectiveness by focusing on communication, collaboration, and employee empowerment. By adopting a more balanced management approach and addressing the specific needs and concerns of their team members, they can create a more positive and productive work environment.
