Position Paper Assessment

For this assignment, you will write a position paper on an ethical topic of your choice related to kinesiology. Ideally, you will be “responding” to something that you see in the world or in the news that you don’t think is quite right, that the way something “is” is not the way that it “ought” to be. But you aren’t only stating a position, you are trying to present a persuasive and credible defense of that position.

While the topic of your position paper us up to you, you should select something that is not directly and extensively discussed in the course texts. If you have any questions about your topic, please discuss with me through email or office hours.

Your position paper will include the following:

Introduction and Statement of Position: In this section you will introduce your topic, state your thesis, and present your ethical position.
Context: In this section you will provide important information to understand the ethical context including relevant facts surrounding the case. This section tells us what we need to know prior to doing the ethical analysis. This should be informed by supporting evidence from at least 2 sources such as media coverage related to the event.
Analysis: In this section you will present your ethical analysis. This will include presenting arguments to support your position, responding to counterarguments, and assessing your ethical position. This section should be informed by supporting evidence from at least 2 academic philosophical texts.
Conclusion/summation: In this section you provide a summation of your position based on the prior sections and concluding remarks
Suggestions on supporting evidence from sources: Think of your position paper as a discussion with people in which you are introducing them to your position as well as to additional information that relates to that information. So, you have your own position, and you have your “friends” who support your position and possible “foes” who don’t support your position. You need to explain your own stance/arguments and explain how and why the additional sources relate to your position.

Position Paper Format: Your position paper should be submitted as one of the following file types: .doc, .docx, or .pdf. It should use 12-pt. Times New Roman font. It should be double-spaced. Use one-inch margins. First line: your name. Second line: Title (centered and underlined). Third line: Begin essay. [Note regarding title: Come up with something interesting, clever, informative, and/or compelling that conveys the topic and its significance.]

Length: There is no page requirement. If your paper is too short, you will have probably failed to accurately introduce your position, provide sufficient context, develop your analysis, and/or adequately summarized your position. But a longer paper is not necessarily better. You want to be clear and concise. You don’t want to introduce irrelevant or extraneous information. So, the length of your position paper is a function of what you need to say to defend your position well.

Citations: Citations should follow the APA (6th Edition) format and should be included both a) in-text and b) in a reference list/bibliography. As a general rule, whenever you quote, paraphrase, summarize, or utilize information from a source, you need to cite it in-text.

Academic references are peer-reviewed journal articles, monographs, or chapters from academic books, not textbooks or popular press books.

When you quote, paraphrase, summarize, and utilize facts and information from other source, you need to cite it in your essay. At the end of the sentence, place the author’s last name, year of publication, and page(s) in parentheses. So, if I quoted from the first reference below, it would look like this (Booth, 2006, 39).
