The goal here is to pick a plan that will win the support of everyone. I have chosen idea 2, which is likely to please all stakeholders, and I do not think there are any modifications to be made. CAGE screeners will be handed to patients, who will fill them out if they want to. These can then be collected at discharge and discussed later by medical staff if they have time.

·         Who?

o    Nurses and patients

·         What?

o    Nurses will issue patients with CAGE questionnaire which they will fill and submit at discharge.

·         Where?

o    In ED (emergency room) during patient admission.

·         When?

o    During patient intake and during discharge.

·         Why?

o    To determine if the patients issued with the CAGE questionnaire have risky drinking habits.

·         How?

o    By evaluating responses to the CAGE questionnaire.

·         Cost/funding source?

o    By evaluating responses to the CAGE questionnaire.

  • Will Carol be happy or unhappy with this decision?

Carol will be happy with the decision to go with idea 1 because it will not take too much time for her nursing staff. She has seen many promising ideas or programs abandoned, so she does not want any ideas that waste her nurses’ time. Carol sees new ideas – which never get implemented fully – as an interruption to her nurses. However, the CAGE program will not involve nurses undergoing training, so she would support the decision.

·         How happy is Carol on a scale of 0 to 10?

o    I will give her an 8. Although the CAGE approach will waste time for the nurses, it will still involve some little time because the nurses will need time to hand the screeners to the patients and collect them.

·         Can you make Carol happy by modifying the plan?

o    Carol will be happy with any modifications made to the plan, provided the changes will not require nurses to spend too much valuable time away from patients.

·         If Carol is not going to be happy with the plan, is this okay? Why or why not?

o    No, it is not okay for Carol to be unhappy with the plan. This is because her rigidness or inflexibility is a hindrance to positive organizational change.

  • Will Carlos be happy or unhappy with this decision?

Carlos will be happy with idea 2 (the CAGE screener) because it does not involve training. He is concerned that the residents are already involved with other training programs, so he will jump at the idea of a program that takes away the training element.

·         How happy is Carlos on a scale of 0 to 10?

o    I give Carlos a 9. Idea 2 will not slow down ED processes, and neither will it take a lot of time away from the residents. However, it will still involve so much time; thus, it will in some way interfere with the treatment of patients; this is why I give Carlos a 9.

o

·         Can you make Carlos happy by modifying the plan?

o    The CAGE screener already addresses Carlos’ big concern: it takes away the training element, which steals time away from his doctors. Therefore, Carlos will be happy with it as it is.

·         If Carlos is not going to be happy with the plan, is this okay? Why or why not?

o    No, it will not be okay for Carlos to be unhappy with the plan because he desires that CCH looks good, and good things do not come easy; interruptions must occur. For positive change to happen in an organization, certain disturbances must also happen to people in that organization.

  • Will Chauncy be happy or unhappy with this decision?

Chauncy will be happy with idea 2 because it has no costs associated with it; hence the chances of being approved will be high. He would also be pleased with idea 1 if it were to be implemented. However, he would not be happy with people who claim they have no time to learn new things or improve processes.

·         How happy is Chauncy on a scale of 0 to 10?

o    I will give Chauncy a 10 because the idea matches his expectations. Idea 1 would also align with Chauncy’s expectations.

·         Can you make Chauncy happy by modifying the plan?

o    Chauncy would be happy with any modifications to the plan provided i) the program implementation period is within 1 year, ii) the modifications increase cost savings and process improvement

·         If Chauncy is not going to be happy with the plan, is this okay? Why or why not?

o    No, it would not be okay for Chauncy to be unhappy with the plan. He is vital for the success of the program. And if the program fails, he will lose his job.

  • Will Cho be happy or unhappy with this decision?

Cho will be happy with idea 2 because it will not involve making changes to the system. He will also be happy with the idea because it will not involve training healthcare staff on new procedures.

·         How happy is Cho on a scale of 0 to 10?

o    I will give Cho a 10. Using the CAGE screener will not interfere with his department, so he will support it 100%.

·         Can you make Cho happy by modifying the plan?

o    Cho will be happy with any modification provided they do not involve adding new procedures and codes that never get used.

·         If Cho is not going to be happy with the plan, is this okay? Why or why not?

o    Cho is an “IT girl.” I do not see where she fits in idea 2 because it will not involve training other staff new procedures, and neither will it involve entering new codes into the system. She has no reason to be unhappy with the program. But if she was to be unhappy, her unhappiness would not have any significant impact of the initiative
