Policy Through Perspective
You have now spent an entire semester amassing of wealth of knowledge regarding explanations, hypotheses, and empirical research to the etiology of crime; but why? Playwriter Anton Chekhov famously stated “knowledge is of no value unless you put it into practice”. Throughout the semester we have discussed direct applications of traditional theories for guiding research on a number of special topic areas.
For this paper, I would like for you to:
Pick one criminological theory and one special topic not discussed in class. Briefly explain why this is a social issue worthy of looking at. (10 points)
Describe how you think this theory can explain this form of crime. (30 points)
Explain how the tenets of this theory have been used by the justice system (prevention, police, courts, corrections) to limit this type of offending. (20 points)
Explain two novel ways that you think the justice system could be improved by applying concepts from this theory. (30 points)
You must use at least 4 peer-reviewed journal sources to support your arguments and statements. You must also have proper spelling, grammar, and APA formatting. (10 points)
Topic to be written about:
Serial Killers – special topic
The Biological Trait Theories, Psychodynamic theory, and the Organized/Disorganized theory – criminology theory
Special requirements
To enhance learning and absorption of class material, students must complete two writing assignments (each are worth 100 points, 40% of overall grade). Papers must be 6-8 pages in length, use 12-point Times New Roman font, be double spaced, use 1-inch margins, and be submitted as a Microsoft Word document
