Mechanical System Design

Your company has agreed to design, build, test and deliver a new retractable Main Landing Gear system for small amphibious airplanes. These types of main landing gears are expected to absorb impact loading during normal and/or emergency landings. For the specific customer, the MLG must be able to extend and retract, be of extreme low weight, and fold into a small compartment within the fuselage (planar movement perpendicular to the flight axis of the plane). Also, the mechanism should be self-locking, or have a locking mechanism (in both, the extended and retracted state). Small and amphibious airplanes are covered by ASTME f-2245, and qualify (FAA) as light sport aircraft if their gross takeoff weight is below 1,320 lbs. (600 kg). The current system and its MLG is shown in Figure 1 during a ASTME f-2245 drop test.

For a labeling of standard components, see Figure 2. Your company has selected you as the engineer responsible to compute, simulate, and design the requested MLG. For this, you will need to consider

  • the kinematics of the linkage,
  • the structural loading,
  • the dynamic response,
  • the activation/power,
  • the detailed part design (drawings, including proper dimensioning, tolerancing)
  • meeting overall

The overall specification is given as follows (and are governed by ASTME f-2245), you need to accommodate the following technical requirements:

  • maximum stroke of 200 mm during impact (of entire MLG)
  • maximum acceleration of the airplane when dropped from a 0.3 m height should not exceed 5 g

  • settling time of the damped travel of the MLG is to be 1.5 seconds or less (2% of steady-state value).
  • Size of compartment in fuselage where MLG is stored in the retracted state is H: 2.5’, W:1’, D:1’

(H: 0.762 m, W: 0.3048 m, D: 0.3048 m).

  • Weight will be an evaluated based on competitiveness with regard to your class mates, e., lowest weight will receive maximum points.

The In order to perform the engineering work, you will do a number of tasks based on a given timeline, which is given below:

Tasks and Timeline:

  1. Familiarize yourself with this type of system. Research books and other references to gather information on the terminology of the parts, the functionality, and the different Develop a glossary of terms and an associated description (preferably with diagrams and figures
  2. Develop a The PDS will need to be done in a professional manner.

  1. Generate assumptions about quantities you do not have and document how you arrive at your assumptions (simple calculations, references, extrapolations, etc.). Research any standards and codes (i.e. ASME XXX, OSHA XXX, ANSI XXX, etc.) Summarize any applicable and pertinent information from the standards you find that have a direct impact on the design of the drive train of this press.

  1. Develop concept designs for the system. At minimum, develop two (2) different concepts, each satisfying the design specifications given and presented in the PDS. Sketch or draw each design concept and present them in a 5 minute professional presentation to the class. List each concept designs advantages and disadvantages, present your selection criteria and evaluation chart as well as which design you choose.

  1. Engineer you design using machine design You will upload your calculations and discus these for one-on-one meetings with the instructors.

  1. Generate drawing files with all technical information (dimensions, tolerances, surface conditions). Include all details and consider the manufacturing process when making the drawings.

  1. Generate a BOM. List supplier and any other pertinent

  1. Generate a manufacturing plan (which part is manufactured how)

  1. Do a detailed cost estimates (document your references for each estimation, do not guess!)

  1. Present your design to class and submit a design report including all material developed during the progress of the project.
