Ageism robs seniors of choice

Ageism robs seniors of choice, independence, dignity and negatively impacts their quality of life.

  1. Watch the videos.
  2.  Read Chapter 5in the Textbook and think about the SOCIAL THEORY that you feel best describes YOURbeliefs.
  3. Think of a Stereotype you currently hold for older people
  4.  Now WRITE: Do NOT include the questions in your answers!!(I will deduct points if you do this!)
  5. SECTION 1:tell me
  • (1)  WHAT IS THE STEREOTYPE you have for older people? Be honest because we all have them…. you’re not being graded for having a stereotype or negative thoughts/ideas.
  • (2) How did you come to have this stereotype??
  • (3) and be honest, have you shared your stereotype with anyone (friends, family, colleagues?).. why or why not?

NOTE:  Again, be honest….even I will groan to my husband if we are at the market and the older customer in front of us pulls out a checkbook.

  1. SECTION 2: … Read Chapter 5 on Social Theories of Aging.

There are many Social Theories about aging… These differ from the theories of why we biologically age since social theory explains more about behavior than physical aging (future topic we will cover).   For this section, I want you to concentrate on the theories… and pick a theory (stay away from the frameworks) that MOST explains your ideas and beliefs about social aging.

  • (1)  tell me about the theory you picked, explain it in your OWN words (don’t copy from the book), and tell me WHY this theory best explains your beliefs.  Use some examples outlined in the book (and yes, you can pick more than one).
  • (2), Now think about the stereotype you mentioned above.  Do you think that ANY of the theories in Chapter 5 would dispel or create stereotypes? Which ones and WHY?   Do you think that any of these theories relate to your stereotype?  Why or Why not?
  1. SECTION 3: WATCH ALL of the Videos about Stereotypes and Ageism… then pick 5 of them…. tell me what you think.  BE SPECIFIC!
  • I want you to find a WOW moment… something that made you think, oh..this is interesting.  OR oh, I didn’t know that.  Mention a statistic…. mention a fact…. mention something from the video that caught your attention (or maybe it was the whole video).. You need to talk about the TOPIC and information conveyed in the video… NOT the music, the actors, or anything that doesn’t pertain to the topic.
  • AND tell me WHY you found it interesting.  Identify each video (can use the title, etc.).  I don’t want to search for your answers… you MUST BULLET each video – you will have 5 bullets!!  WHAT & WHY!!

Criteria:

College level writing , WORD or PDF ONLY. 700 Word MINIMUM (I know you are going to be able to write much more, but I need to set a minimum for those students that don’t like to write… More is better)… DO NOT INCLUDE MY QUESTIONS in your paper (you WILL lose points)!!!

  • Full sentences & follow the FORMAT guidelines (USE BULLETS or numbers or separate paragraphs to help me navigate… and this MUST be full sentence paragraphs).
  • LABEL your sections (example: Section 1, Section 2, Section 3),
    • Section 1
      • (1) blah, blah blah
      • (2) blah, blah, blah
      • etc
    • Section 2
      • (1) blah, blah blah
      • (2) blah, blah, blah
    • Section 3
      • video “title or part of title”  The WHAT (what fact you found interesting) and WHY (why did you find it something new, interesting, disturbing, etc)   example:  The Wow moment in the video ” Millenials, etc,” was when (and this is where you are going to tell me WHAT you found that gave you a reaction)….   The reason I picked this moment was because it made me remember a time when. OR maybe… I didn’t know about this and I can see how this might ……. (all of your reasons are going to be personal to YOU… but you need to be clear and be sure you explain your why)
      • video….
      • etc

NOTE:  you must have full sentences and thorough answers
