Observational assignment

Purpose:

This assignment will provide you with an opportunity to observe infant or young toddler development first hand and apply the theoretical knowledge that you are acquiring in the course to that observation. It will also give you an opportunity to practice carrying out a running record observation.

Part A

Step 1: Planning

The observation will be conducted by watching an Early Learning Centre YouTube video that the instructor has provided.

Plan to watch the video WITHOUT pausing for the full video duration.

*Focus on boy in blue shirt*

Step 2: Observation

Make sure that you read and re-read the “Recommendations for Carrying out Running Record Observations” document prior to observing. Have ready the Observation Data Sheet provided as well as several copies of the Running Record Observation form (or your own hand-created duplication) provided. You are now ready to start recording, using the Running Record Observation form. Plan to watch the video for the full way through and take notes. Use the time column to note the start time, the end time, and several intervals (typically whenever the child changes activities or every 5 minutes). Since it is a video, write down the time you started watching the video yourself. You must submit your rough notes along with your *polished* copy of your running record. You can submit this as a word document (if you typed your notes) or as pictures (if you have hand-written notes).

Sample Running Record Excerpt:

10:00am
Brendan walks across the room to the sandbox. He picks up a plastic cup from the sandbox in his right hand and fills it with sand before he turns the cup over, spilling the sand into the box. The sand covers an action figure that is in the sandbox. He digs out the action figure with his left hand. He pours sand over the action figure and digs it out again, repeating the process twice.

Part B

Step 3: Interpretation and Curriculum Extension

Using the chart provided in the Observation Assignment Package:

• Select a minimum of 5 examples (see below) of actions or behaviours from your observation and complete the chart using these examples (select the ones that you feel are most significant – see below)
• In the first column, state the behavior/action that you are “interpreting”
• In the second column, record the developmental domain that you feel that behavior or action is most indicative of. State the domain in general terms as well as being specific about which aspect or characteristic of that domain is relevant (i.e. physical/gross motor)
• In the third column, explain why the behavior is significant and if it is typical of a child this age. What is the child trying to tell you with their behavior? Provide an in-text citation (course textbook, ELECT or How Does Learning Happen?) to back up your explanation/interpretation.
• Lastly, you will make a suggestion of how to support the child through the curriculum based on your observations. How would you plan based on their interests and needs? How might you extend their learning?

You MUST include at least one example of each:

• Physical development (consider gross and fine motor actions)
• Cognitive development (consider behaviours that illustrate sensorimotor thinking, problem solving)
• Language development (consider how the child communicates both expressively and receptively)
• Social development (consider interactions with others, social referencing)
• Emotional development (consider smiling, laughing, crying, emotional regulation, temperament and attachment behaviours)

In addition, you MUST include at least one reference from each of the following:

• Course Textbook
• ELECT
• How Does Learning Happen?

APA citations are required throughout. Include an APA reference list at the end of your document. For more information on APA style referencing, please see the link to APA @ Conestoga. This can be found on eConestoga.

Recommendations for Carrying Out Running Record Observations

• Read the assignment carefully.
• Keep yourself as removed as possible. Do not refer to yourself in the first person and try not to have to refer to yourself at all.
• Be accurate. Provide lots of detail. In your polished version think about what is relevant and avoid too much repetition. Consider your final draft from the perspective of someone reading it for the first time.
• Be descriptive (use adverbs and adjectives); include facial expression, posture, voice tone etc.
• Connect one action to another. Describe how the subject gets from point A to point B
• Note the time whenever your subject changes activity.
• Focus on your subject. Describe actions of others (teachers and children) only to the extent that they affect the actions of your subject.
• Be objective
• Record observable behaviours only. Avoid presumptions concerning thought processes (he notices…..), intent (he decides to….), feelings (he happily…..), and state of mind (he gets upset….) etc.
• Record all contextual information under “context” (the children are in the senior room) and save all interpretation for your summary (i.e. It’s her second week at the centre).
• Begin your observation with your subject’s name (pseudonym). (Jason is in the doll centre…).
• Use one tense consistently, use the present tense.
• Use full sentences in your polished version.
• Get someone not in the class to read your final draft. Ask them if they get a clear, detailed, but uncluttered picture of how your child spent the time

Action or Behaviour (example from observation; include at least one example from each required domain)
Developmental Domain (which domain is your example most indicative of? Include domain and sub-domain)
Explanation or Interpretation of Significance; Include APA Citation (what does your example tell you about the child’s development? What inference can you make? Is this typical of a child of this age? All 3 resources must be used in this section: Course Textbook; ELECT; How Does Learning Happen)
Curriculum Planning
(based on this observation, how would you support the child through your curriculum?)

Specific requirements: Early childhood development
