Question Prompt 1

Think about the many times Anne Fadiman in The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down describes emergency rooms as doctors care for and interact with Lia and her parents. Those descriptions in the ER (and when she’s hospitalized) reveal a lot about how cultural miscommunication can result in significant social injustices for lower-literacy individuals (in this case, a family of immigrants). In the Beauty in Breaking, we also see life in the ER, but this time, exclusively from a doctor’s perspective. Michele Harper comes in contact with a variety of people from groups marginalized by differences (e.g., African Americans, prisoners, drug addicts, etc.), and her interactions with them, from her perspective as an African American female doctor, give us another perspective on how our healthcare system disenfranchises individuals from these groups.

The two books were written 23 years apart, and yet they both present points-of-view on the inequities in our healthcare system. Write an essay/post that compares the care those in marginalized groups received in these books. In what ways were people in these groups disrespected or supported by healthcare workers (and/or the healthcare system). What has changed over the years? What has not? Finally, how can the health professions move forward from where things are today to reduce the social injustices these authors have revealed?

Use short, integrated quotes from both books to support your ideas. Use in-text citation. No Works Cited/References.
