3rd Reading Analysis
Instructions:
Write a 300-400 word response to the following prompt:

While the Shakers and the Spiritualists introduced new opportunities for women in the United States, in other ways, these movements also reinforced traditional gender roles. Compare the role of women within the two movements, with attention to the broader changes facing U.S. society during the 19th century. In your answer, be sure to draw directly from the reading by Braude as well as EITHER the reading by Foster OR the documentary film, The Shakers: Hands to Work, Hearts to God.
(Note: the Foster reading gives greater detail than the documentary film on the question of how the Shakers reinforced traditional gender roles)
As you formulate your answer, be sure to refer directly to the materials mentioned above, and also be sure to complete the other readings and lectures in order to develop the strongest possible answer. Pay close attention to any time two materials (such as a reading or a film and a lecture) overlap, as these are important points you may want to highlight in your answer.
