Live PD Final Paper

The episode of Live PD was an extremely active episode with different correlations and patterns that I can draw from. Before I started to watch this episode, I put fourteen variables into place, each with their own set of variables which can be seen below in the codebook. The reason why I chose these variables is because I watch Live PD almost every week and I have a good sense of what happens during the show so by having this knowledge, it allowed me to thoroughly think through my variables and use the ones that I believed would garner the best data. Some of the variables, such as Name, Length, Title, and Episode, were standard and had to be included. The others were taken from an article distributed during class with the exception of a few that I had to create myself. The ones that I created myself were Police Dog Involved, Number of Officers Involved, and Arrest Made. I felt that the articles variables were suffice but were not complete and by adding the variables I created, it allowed me to give a wholesome approach from incident to incident for my data analysis. While doing this assignment, these variables could also address broader social issues such as racial disparities (more of one race being stopped than another). My variables will allow me to analyze the results and see if I can identify a racial disparity in stops in the episode I watched. In addition to this, another broader social issue that I could look for is particular areas or crimes being targeted more than others and variables such as type of crime will help me conclude on this. Throughout this paper, my goal is to gather data for my variables while watching the episode and see if there are any patterns or correlations. I will also include any troubles I had and a few suggestions on how I could take this project further.

Below, you will find my results from the excel spreadsheet that corresponds with the variables that I have listed above. Each incident that takes place in the episode has a title such as “Moto1” or “Traffic10”. The name corresponds to the type of incident and the number corresponds to what order it took place in the episode. This is not one of my variables; it just tells the person reading the data what each incident name means.

For the analysis portion of this paper, I wanted to look over the data I gathered and look for any patterns or correlations. The first thing that I noticed was that out of the 25 incidents I recorded, 12 of them were traffic violations, which is a little less than half. This pattern seems to be a pattern among all law enforcement when there is not much going on. Law enforcement pulls vehicles over for no headlights, burnt out taillight, no license plate light, etc. and when this happens, according to my data, only 25% of those stops led to arrests. These stops are merely to let the driver know of the violation and see if the stop leads to a bigger finding such as a gun or drugs. A common assumption in the world is that black individuals tend to come into contact with law enforcement more often than whites but according to the data I collected, 17 out of the 25 incidents included a white suspect while only four included a black suspect. Although I cannot conclude or extrapolate about the entire population that the assumption I stated before is wrong, the data I collected shows the opposite of this assumption. Another trend that I noticed was that out of the 25 incidents, 100% of the officers were male which accurately represents the notion that this is a pre-dominantly male workforce with the occasional female officers. These trends that I found in my data are just some of the major ones I noticed right away.

Knowing this, I believe I can conclude that recording the results, with the exact same variables, will cause the data to be different from episode to episode. This is true because each episode is different from another, with different suspects, crimes, officers, and locations. In order to draw excellent correlations and trends in Live PD episodes, I would have to record data for multiple episodes and see if any patterns unfold. I can also conclude it is difficult to compare two situations because each is unique. It is easy to look at this type of work and make a vague conclusion about incidents but each incident has its different set of factors such as a gun being involved, attitudes, etc. which make it extremely difficult to compare an incident to another.

Some troubles that I encountered while doing this project was when they went to another incident and did not return to the incident before. This is noted in my results section where this is blank spaces, for example, in the arrest made column. This made it difficult because I felt as if my coding for the particular incident was not complete. There are also blank spaces in my results under R-S (Race of the Suspect) where the suspect was not shown. Another difficulty that I had while doing this project was determining what crime I should put down because for incident, Verbal9, I could have either put Assault/Battery or Verbal Dispute, and I decided to put Verbal Dispute because an arrest was not made. This shows how discretion is involved in this project by making determinations when coding through the facts given by the officers. The last difficulty I had was when there was more than one suspect and for my codebook, I only recorded the first suspect. I should have been more specific in my codebook in this sense.

If this project was longer and more detailed, I would take it further by expanding my codebook and recording mostly everything I see. Some examples of this would be traffic stops that led to drug arrests or drugs in general and lying to the officers. These are just a few examples on how I would open up my codebook more but I think that by expanding, it would allow me to find patterns among incidents and locations that are being followed. Another way that I could take this project further is to watch multiple episodes, recording data using the same variables and look for different patterns. It is hard to conclude on correlations and patterns with only one pool to dip into. I could also add another variable, which could be departments, and throughout multiple episodes, I could compare each incident from each department and that could show a pattern. Another way that I could take it further would be by watching the episode twice to cross-examine my findings and legitimize my codebook. By re-watching the episode, it solidifies that what I have recorded is accurate and exactly what happened during each incident. It would also give the reader of my codebook a feeling of comfort knowing that the material they are reading is accurate and correct.
