Invertebrate Zoology Research Paper

Topic: Dealing with the Challenges Posed by ________________(You choose an invertebrate).

Although most invertebrates are no threat to humans, some cause us direct physical harm, others damage our food supply, while others damage infrastructure. You are going to investigate a single species of your choosing that poses some sort of threat to us. Some examples:

Parasites infecting humans

Parasites infecting livestock

Disease vectors

Pests that attack crops

Invertebrates that damage structures (e.g. termites, shipworms)

Invertebrates causing other damages (e.g. Zebra mussels)

Paper Contents:

I. Introduce the species. What is its classification? Where is it found? Share relevant information concerning its natural history.

II. Explain the threat. Explain the mechanisms of harm. How common is the problem? Where in the world does the problem occur? Review papers would really help here.

III. Provide a case study. Use this section to provide a real-world example of the threat. What was the cause? What was the harm? What research is still needed?

IV. What can be done to prevent or ameliorate the harm? Have we done so? Have we been successful? What are the costs of this prevention/amelioration?

V. Literature Cited

3 page minimum (not including the literature cited section), double-spaced, 12 point font.

EVERY section must be supported with citations. You may NOT cite websites or encyclopedias.
