Congratulations! You have been asked to serve on a committee tasked with reviewing the current system for paying politicians in your country and recommending improvements. Please keep your report to a maximum of 2 pages (ideally 1-1.5). You should therefore:

2. Describe its current system for paying politicians:
(a) how much do politicians earn?
(b) how is their compensation structured (ie. what is the distribution of cash, benefits, pensions, etc)?
(c) what other benefits from office do politicians get in addition to their salaries?
(d) who sets politicians’ salaries?
(e) how did they decide on the current level?
(f) what do citizens think about how (and how much) politicians are paid?
3. Discuss the selection, incentive and representation properties of the current pay structure:
(a) selection: does the current system of rewards attract capable and honest leaders to enter politics?
(b) incentives: does the current system of rewards encourage officeholders to perform well (in maximizing their voters’ welfare for example, by delivering economic development)?
(c) representation: does the current system of rewards draw a wide section of society into politics?
4. Recommend how the current pay system can be improved and outline reasons why
