Bioreaction

Describe a time when you were in a social situation that triggered a bioreaction(s) by doing the following:

  1. Describe the environment around you before and during the bioreaction(s).
    • Due to this pandemic work environments are extremely hectic and always understaffed. My normal position at work is House Supervisor. That particular day at work my assignments were House Supervisor, Telemetry technician and unit clerk. I was already triggered when I seen my assignments because it was an impossible assignment. As a HS I need to be able to move since I am the leader for Rapid Response Team and Code Blue among many other responsibilities. If I am on Telemetry I am not even allowed to look away from the monitor. However, given all the circumstances it was a pretty quiet night and everyone was doing well with their assignments as well. Then I heard the emergency alarm, suddenly it was not quiet anymore, everyone running towards the room the alarm came from and it became chaotic within seconds.
  2. Describe the stimulus (which the amygdala interprets as a threat) that triggered the bioreaction.
    • The emergency alarm was the stimulus that triggered the bioreaction. That alarm only means either an adult cardiac arrest (code blue) or someone is about to have a cardiac arrest if we don’t act fast (RRT).
  3. Describe the bioreaction(s) (i.e., fight, flight, freeze, and appease) you experienced.
    • I froze; a lot of things were going through my mind at one time. What do I do first? Do I leave the station and run in the room? Do I call a code blue since I’m the unit clerk also? How can I call that without assessing the patient since I am the leader? How am I supposed to even lead since I am not even allowed to move from the area?
  4. Describe the physical sensations (e.g., sweaty palms, tight muscles) you experienced in your body when you became aware of the bioreaction(s).
    • I was getting hot, I could feel the blood rushing to my face and getting red. I felt numb and for a second I couldn’t hear anything. Couldn’t comprehend what anyone was saying to me.
  5. Describe the feeling(s) you experienced in the social situation before, during, and after the bioreaction(s).
    • Before the bioreaction I was relaxed, thought everything was under control and it would be a smooth night. During the situation I was stressed, overwhelmed and confused. Shortly after the reaction I was able to clam my self down and gained control of the situation. I was able to think clearly and was not confused anymore.
  6. Describe what you would do differently to successfully navigate this type of reaction the next time you experience a similar social situation.
    • Next time I would have a plan ahead of time. That way when I hear the emergency alarm I would not be triggered and would function properly and accordingly.
  7. Reflect on why it is important to react differently when you experience this bioreaction.
  • It very important to react differently, not only my team is counting on me to lead it’s a matter of life and death and in that brief moment I froze it delayed steps I could of taken to get the help we need faster to save that patients life.
  1.  Demonstrate professional communication in the content and presentation of your submission.
