Make something up for this assigned – Community Field Experience
Assignment Description and Goals: This assignment provides an opportunity for students to explore their community and share their observations with the class on interesting and important activities and work that reveals how are we are doing in developing sustainable communities. In this assignment, students will make a field visit or work on a project and document observations regarding this community work and post it in a class discussion forum set up for this assignment. The activities to be observed and documented can be a wide variety; everything from large-scale public works projects to small actions by neighborhoods, businesses or even individuals. Or your field experience could be the documentation of a personal effort you make to explore new experiences that could be instructive to how material studied in class could be put into action. This could include such things as helping out with a neighborhood project like a community garden, recycling event, or green street; or personal efforts to reduce your environmental footprint with food, transportation and/or energy alternatives. There are many possibilities for using the field experience assignment as way to branch out and/or put into practice something you have considered but haven’t done yet. Regardless of the field experience you choose, it is important that your observations and documentation you post about your work, should provide relevant insights into the material, topics and issues we are studying and discussing in this class. The learning goals for this assignment are: 1. To provide exposure and experience with urban planning and problem-solving skills; 2. To promote comprehension and appreciation of urban environmental issues and challenges and ways to address those challenges; 3. To increase communication and collaboration skills.
Complete your field experience that contains the following (100-points): a. A well written description (150-250 words) of the field experience including the context (both the location and the history); b. At least one graphic illustration (multiple images are usually best) that represents to the work and subject of your field experience. Pictures taken by the student are best; though in some cases images retrieved from other sources including the internet may be acceptable. Remember, the objective of this assignment is to have an ‘in-person’ experience; c. A thoughtful reflection and assessment (approximately 300 words) addressing the objectives of the assignment and how ‘lessons learned’ from your field experience pertains to the critical perspectives and issues facing cities in addressing environmental challenges with specific references to material covered in class.;
