In a 4-5 page essay, create a proposal essay for the proposal you have outlined. You should include 3-5 credible outside sources which support your claim.
Just because this is the “rough” draft doesn’t mean that you can’t write multiple drafts before submitting the assignment. I encourage you to get feedback from online tutors, tutors in the LRC (Learning Resource Center) Writing Lab, friends, and family. The better this draft is the more valuable the feedback will be. Remember you have a solid model essay
to refer to (remember that it’s in APA form, not MLA–no cover sheets for MLA).
Here’s the full criteria for the assignment:
You have to have a thesis that takes a stand on a controversial topic that has a probability of being accepted by a diverse, open-minded audience. The thesis must be a complex proposal to solve a real problem. The solution has to have a probability of being accepted by a broad audience.
You need to support your topic sentences with reasons facts, statistics, authorities, anecdotes, scenarios, cases, and textual evidence.
You must also argue against an opposing point of view. Counterarguments acknowledge, accommodate, and refute the reader’s concerns and possible objections. Consider opposing points of view in a counterargument paragraph or two or three. One type of counterargument in a proposal paper acknowledges the strongest arguments against the thesis, makes concessions, and refutes the opposing view. Another type can propose an alternative solution. Counterarguments can use a sentence starter like “Some people say that…”
Your argument needs to have a formal structure and be connect by a series of topic sentences heading body paragraphs that lead logically to a conclusion summarizes your main ideas and then reflects, makes a call to action, and extends the central idea(s) to more universal concepts.
The argument guidelines
below and your own argument outline:
Introduction
Have an attention getting opening
Give sufficient background to situate your argument. Define the issue.
Make an arguable assertion (of opinion, policy, evaluation, cause, interpretation) with your thesis
Qualify your assertion if necessary (narrow your topic)
Include a forecast, plan or map (Answer one or more of the following: Where is this paper going? Where will the evidence come from? What sort of reasons do you have for making your assertion?)
Body Paragraphs
Start with a focused topic sentence
Support: reasons, examples, statistics, anecdotes, textual evidence
Explain, reflect, or comment on all support

Instructions
Write a rough draft of 4-5 pages about a proposal topic. You can use the proposal model
(Links to an external site.)
as guide, but no research is required. Remember that the model is written in APA, but your work needs to be in MLA format.
You can use the topics appearing in the discussion board or the announcements. Be sure that the both the problem and solution are sufficiently complex.
You might also spend time surfing in the Opposing Viewpoints data base
(Links to an external site.)
or one of the library’s other data bases. Here’s a link to recordings of previous library workshops on databases

. Before starting, you might want to experiment with another prewriting method to generate details essay: journaling, mapping, listing, or outlining.
In an exploratory draft, you may not have fully developed the complexity of your argument or have a fully developed reflective conclusion that elaborates on your thesis. In this draft, you should take a try at constructing one or two or three counterarguments.
You’re just going to make the best proposal you can at this point in the process.
Submit in MLA format (header, heading,12 pt. Times New Roman, etc.) using paragraphs (but don’t worry too much about overall correctness).
