Although the Emancipation Proclamation did not free all slaves, it did free slaves in the South to create confusion for the Confederate army during the war. We oftentimes refer to this document as the point in American history where slaves were completely emancipated. After reading this chapter and reading the entire speech (attached) write a one-page1-2 page essay on the historical significance of this document by discussing its context. Context in this case is the circumstances under which it was necessary for Abraham Lincoln to write this. Obviously you should consider that the US Civil War was taking place but less obvious is how Lincoln was navigating the very thorny idea of race relations in America at the time. So, the answer is not only in the document but at this point in the course, the answer should come to you after learning about the Civil War in this chapter and understanding that the Civil War is the culmination of many years of social strife that divided America. I am also including a site on the Civil War that supplements the chapter and the document. Make sure you quote Foner at least ONCE and the document at least ONCE.
