Exam 2 Study Guide
For the exam, you will be expected to demonstrate an understanding of the concepts from class and how they interrelate. Take home exams are not about copying facts from your course materials, but about understanding what you are studying and making connections between the topics. Be sure you have read/watched and understand all of the assigned readings, handouts, and videos, including in the textbook. In addition, here are some more specifics for each topic:
Read the highlighted sections of Chapter 2 in the textbookOrganizational Culture (pp. 31-37) stop at “Types of Culure
Read over the “Socialization Model” handout and let me know if you have any questions. It’s important that you understand the stages of the model and how culture is reinforced.
Socialization and Culture (pp. 42-49).
Be sure you understand what artifacts are and how they reflect the basic values of the culture.
Power and Politics
Read the highlighted sections of Chapter 10 in the textbook. It does an excellent job explaining the concepts.
Be sure you understand how power and politics impact managers and employeePower and Authority (pp. 291-292)
Interpersonal Power (pp. 292-294) Stop at Need for Power
Interdepartmental Power (pp.292-294) Stop at Obedience to Authority

Read the highlighted sections of Chapter 17.
Watch the video, “A Dangerous Business Revisited” on organizational change at Tyler Pipe/McWane. It’s about a company with some real problems that had to change. Make sure you understand the relationships across Modules 9, 10, and 11.

Focus on how and why organizations change (or don’t).
Read all of Chapter 7 in the textbook and Be sure and pay close attention to Figure 7.1 (p. 197)
Read over the Problem-Focused/Emotion-Focused Coping Handout and the additional readings on managing stress.

Read pages 116-117 of Chapter 4 exploring Emotional Intelligence.
