Explication:

A short 2 to 4 page, correct MLA style/form, research oriented/ponder paper, or it may be a primary source literary analysis.  A bit like the old literary journal The Explicator, that would simply take a phrase or bit of a story or poem, or a theme, etc…  that needed some further analysis or speculation.   Focus the content on communication or the lack thereof.  I will consider development, expression, and interpretation.  Think of it as a paper that takes a small, “Hem, I wonder why?” and then fleshes it out in a sort of editorial style – what I call an “angle” – supported by facts, statistics, and/or quotes from authorities in the field, which calls into need 1] internal citations and a 2] works cited page. Academic sources ONLY. “How many sources do I need?”  Be like baby bear’s porridge – not too hot, not to cold, but just right.  This is NOT a cut and paste exercise.  This is an exercise in organization and research and accountability that YOU researched, proving YOU wrote the paper, and that YOU tried and gave the assignment step-by-step preparation.  I will be able to tell a paper- mill paper from a paper generated by true curiosity and research.  “Off Topic” papers will not be considered. NO PLAGIARISM.

Examples of Choices:

Choose your own topic; develop your own topic, that way you will be interested in the research.  Still, approve your topic with me.  We might be able to narrow or expand it as needed with a bit of discussion.  It should somehow, someway be connected with the content of this course.  The following are suggestions, not a “have to” list.

Professional Examples:

Many times shows like 20/20 will start out with a sort of idea to investigate.  Another good media example is All Things Considered on public radio.  Magazines like the Smithsonian and others also have excellent examples.  These programs are excellent examples of posing a question [a thesis] then following through where the research leads them.  By the way, good research is research that you follow, not that you lead.  Don’t go into a topic with an answer you are trying to prove; better, go into it with a question you would like to research and let the paper become the subject of your findings.

Pay attention to standard practices of writing and correctness.  MLA style should be correct.  If you don’t know how to cite correctly, learn how.  The style book is like a dictionary; you are not supposed to memorize it; you are supposed to use it.  Don’t assume that a web site is automatically doing your MLA works cited page correctly.  I will show you correct style on M/T for the paper and sample papers.
