This speech requires a little background information. Schlafly is going to spend a lot of time criticizing Henry Kissinger. Kissinger was national Security Advisor and Secretary of State for most of Nixon’s term in office. He is credited with several diplomatic successes including ending the Vietnam War, negotiating an end to the 1973 war between Israel, Syria and Egypt, and for being the person who “opened” China to the west. Kissinger is also often cited as developing the policy of détente. Détente was a relaxing of Cold War tensions. It was designed to reduce the prospect of nuclear war. Not everybody thought these accomplishments deserved praise. Some people of the political left criticized Kissinger for his role in genocide in East Timor and for supporting brutal dictators who massacred civilians such as Augusto Pinochet in Chile. On the political right, people attacked Kissinger because they believed Kissinger was making the U.S. look weak. That is why Schflay gave this speech.
