Interview a professional within your field of study or interest. This might be your advisor or a professor working within your degree program, someone you have worked with in the past, or someone you seek out because they are a respected expert in this area.

Argue. Follow the guidelines provided by Back to the Lake (“Argument”, pp. 599 – 619) and The Little Seagull Handbook (“Arguments”, pp. 43 – 48).

Begin and end memorably. Consider sharing your own personal reasons for pursuing this career (remember pathos!).

Take a clear position. You may agree or disagree with the writer of the article or essay you’ve found, but your position should be as clear as his or hers (remember logos!). This position must be clearly stated in your thesis.

Make use of reliable research: minimum five sources (not including our readings). Three sources minimum must be peer-reviewed.

Provide summarized, paraphrased, and/or quoted material from your sources. Reminders:

o Introduce your sources; establish your source’s ethos so that you might establish your own ethos.

o Aim to provide about three citations per page.
o For every line on the page of source material, you should have three lines on the

page discussing it (that is, introducing it, explaining how it relates to your current

claim, connecting it to preceding or upcoming sources, etc.).

Provide a counter-argument. This means presenting a position that is in conflict with your own both fairly and comprehensively. Learning to do this effectively is key to good argumentation since it gives you a basis for your own argument and specific points to focus

on. Done properly, your argument is an informed response to someone else’s position.

Write 1750 words minimum (about seven pages).

Use APA or MLA format. You must follow one of these two formats. This means making

sure you have the appropriate cover page or heading, the correct page numbering, in-text

citations, and a References or Works Cited page for the text you’re using.

Be in the correct file name format and provide the correct subject line in the email submission: Please name the file “Essay 4 – [your last name here]”.
