The Emergency medical technicians (EMTs) are professional caregivers focused on conducting primary and noninvasive interventions that concentrate on saving lives and reducing risk in emergencies. Their skills range from being compassion, situational awareness, and problem-solving, communication, and listening abilities. They play a critical role in care delivery, especially in emergencies. It is important to note that a regular experience of violence and death has an adverse impact on mental health. According toKapalo, Bonnell, and LaViola, there is limited information on EMTs’ cognitive impact and paramedics’ experience at workthan nurses and doctors (134). Wages impact individual input to an organization, and they affect the culture of an organization. Underpaid has a negative effect on the employee, especially when it is a high stake position like EMT. The unpaid emergency medical technicians face challenges in their professionals and life that affect their performance.

Low payment puts emergency medical techniciansin a difficult position where they work overtime to meet their needs. Cvenkel argues that poor pay affects an individual’s life-work balance (245). Imagine working for a position that pays a wage that cannot sustain living standards. As a result, an individual searches for a secondary job where they can supplement their salary. Further, with more responsibility and roles to play, a person risks burnout and sleep deprivation. These factors promote the risk of developing health issues, which in turn affects performance at work. Therefore underpaid EMTs have a high risk of developing burnout, mainly because they are dealing with critical healthcare services. Underpayment introduces new challenges that would otherwise be avoided with a better salary.

The EMT profession is the first respondent to urgent care and works in hospitals, fire departments, or ambulance services (Studnek, 88). Their skills involve knowledge about heart attacks, childbirth, and traumatic injuries, among others. They have undergone comprehensive training and learning, which enable them to get a certificate and a license. As a result, they play a significant role in the recovery or treatment process. Besides, they work towards saving a life and putting them out of harm’s way. Therefore it is logical to think that they require a reasonable payment for the services they offer. Apart from working in a stressful environment, EMTs are expected to provide quality services at all times. As a result, it is evident that this profession offers more services and is expected to go the extra mile while being underpaid.

Underpaid EMTs who look for alternative work affect their work because of fatigue. Burnout is a negative factor that affects not only personal life but also work performance. According to Hancock, burnout affectsthe mental state, and a person can be tempered or irrational (315). As a result, they affect communication with other professionals and may affect their work. Imagine working in an environment that requires dedication and commitment to save a life, which takes over time. At the same time, the other part-time jobs are still pending. These activities stretch the brain and may result in burnout, which will affect performance. It is essential to note that people’s lives are at stake and require a fresh mind. Therefore without having a settled mind, these practitioners put the patients at risk. Further, they put their health at risk too. Thus improving their living standards can promote their self-esteem into performing their role efficiently without disruptions. Besides, it is noteworthy that the EMT works outdoors facing different types of environments and indoor.

However, the low payment is factored into their role, which is minimal compared to other caregivers. For instance, the nurses perform, and other professions perform more engaging works than the EMT. Besides, the education level is different. While the EMT course may take a year to get a certificate, other programs can up to five years. Therefore, the professions’ differencesignificantly impacts their salaries (Wright et al., 99). This law payment has consequently affected the health industry in different ways. While the EMT workers have a different living standard, they may choose a different profession or even advance through education. This acts, as a result, affects the number of EMTs in the health system. Others may prefer their other part-time jobs and therefore affect delivery as an EMP practitioner.

In conclusion, it is essential to acknowledge EMT’s role, a significant player in the health system, especially in emergencies. Although they acquire a variety of skills, their job is more than an identified role. They play a significant role in the care process as they are first in contact with a patient. Low pay leads to part-time job, fatigue, and burnout, which affects their job performance and relationship with other workers. Underpayment is a negative part, especially in comparing the role of other health practitioners. It dived the workforce, which affects job satisfaction. Therefore the underpaid EMT face a tough time, especially when the economy is becoming harder and the standard of living is rising.
