please ensure to quote and cite the sources being used. Compare Oscar Wilde’s Salome to Ana Lily Amirpour’s 2014 film A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night. Comment on some of the important differences and/or similarities in the ways Wilde’s play and the film approach the themes of gender, sexuality, desire, violence, agency, the gaze, and/or the femme fatale.
Remember, however, that this is an exercise in textual analysis, not an editorial or an opinion piece. As such, do not lose sights of the texts (the play and the film) as you are constructing your argument. You need to clearly indicate how specifically one or some (not all) of these themes and concepts are used in these cultural texts. Your reading of the texts and their gender politics may differ from mine or from that of your colleagues. As such, you must convince me that your reading is valuable and useful. To achieve that, your argument must be clearly articulated to concrete and accurate examples from the texts.
This is also an exercise in academic writing. Therefore, your thesis statement must be clearly stated in your introductory paragraph (see the document “Research Question and Thesis Statement” discussed in class for more detailed instructions and examples). Please note that you will be evaluated on your attention to clarity, clean presentation and adequate grammar, spelling and syntax. Your responses should also respect proper formatting (ie. proper usage and presentation of citations and work cited list). For this course, I expect you to use the 8th edition of the MLA citation style, available online (in an abridged version) at: https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/mla_style/mla_formatting_and_style_guide/mla_formatting_and_style_guide.html.
Remember that a good assignment is one in which you can demonstrate that you truly understand and master the ideas discussed in class. In other words, you are expected to efficiently and logically integrate to your own writing elements from the course material (where applicable) and from personal research (focus on academic publications when appropriate and avoid using Wikipedia, SparkNotes or other similar sources. You must cite at least ONE (1) scholarly/peer-reviewed source stemming from your own research. Please consult on Nexus my pre-recorded lecture from Week 9a on how to do library research.
Do not cite your professor’s lectures as one of your sources. You can work with the ideas discussed during lectures, but please do so in conversation with their original sources and/or with other scholars. Next to brief quotations, consider paraphrasing as a more efficient approach to discussing other academic material.
Students shall upload to Nexus a typed, double-spaced, 12 pts font copy of their assignment before 12pm on December 10, 2020. This assignment is worth 30% of your final grade for the term. All papers submitted after the deadline and without documented justification (ie. medical note) or prior agreement with the instructor will be considered late and will be penalized in accordance with the policy detailed in the course syllabus. No late assignments will be accepted after December 17.
