Your final assignment asks you to reflect on the writing and research you have completed in this course and compare it to the writing you will do in future courses and in your potential career. It also asks you to reflect on how the information literacy (understanding of credible sources of information) will impact your future as a US citizen. Written reflection aids in cognitive processing (moving information from working memory to long-term memory), solidifies learning, and helps transfer skills to new context.
First, you will need to determine the kinds of writing typically carried out in courses in your major and in your potential career. What kinds of writing is typically done by professionals in your chosen profession? Hint: check out professional organizations (e.g. APA or IEEE) to learn more about the kind of writing done in your field. Make a list of the kinds of writing (written genres) done in your field.
Take a look at examples of written genres (kinds of writing) done in your field. For example, if you will become a business professional, you may want to look at examples of business proposals. As you examine these models, consider the following questions:
How is information organized, from beginning to end? In other words, what appears where?
What kinds of sentences are used (questions, statements, commands, etc.)?
What do you notice about the kind of language that is used?
How would you describe the tone of the writing?
How do the texts use rhetorical appeals (ethos, pathos, logos)?
Are section headings used in the documents?
Do the documents include text only, or text and images?
What is the layout like?
What font size and style is used?
How would you describe the “look” of the documents?
Are sources referenced? If so, how?
I recommend keeping track of your answers (analysis) to these questions in a Word file or notebook.
Compare the kind of writing we have done in this course to the kind of writing you may do in the future. How will the skills developed in this class apply to your other college courses? How will these skills apply to your career?
Finally, reflect on how the information literacy and listening skills developed in this course will apply to your life as a US citizen. How will credible information impact your discussions with family and friends over social, political, environmental, and health issues? You should include what you learned from the You’re Not Listening book excerpt.
Compile your response into a well-organized essay of 1000-1025 words using MLA or APA format. You should use secondary sources in your reflection; please cite them and include a Works Cited or References page. You will submit this essay through the appropriate submission link.
