Personal Research Narrative

Narratives are a way in which we understand our world. As opposed to chronicles that simply list events, narratives have a motivated trajectory that connects the events it narrates in a meaningful way. Further, narratives are persuasive. As such they can persuade through appeals to logos, ethos, and pathos. Respectively, this means that one can make meaning by showing connections among narrated events in a way that: 1. appeals to rationality, 2. persuades by establishing credibility of the narrator, 3. moves the audience by carefully and ethically evoking emotion.

For this assignment, write a research narrative that tells why the research is necessary and meaningful. Start by capturing the attention of the audience that allows the audience to identify and connect with the story that you’re about to tell with regard to your research. You might do this by explaining why you thought it made sense to take on the research that you are and how you felt personally motivated to do so. This makes an appeal to rationality and emotion. Then, go on to describe how you plan to go about conducting your research. This establishes credibility. Second, show how there is a need to solve the problem that your research addresses. Third, show how your research can potentially satisfy this need. Fourth, visualize the satisfaction for the audience with an example. And lastly, show how your research can be a starting point of future actions with regard to your research problem.

My research interest:

My primary research interest is investigating the extent to which current effective approaches to successfully teach mathematics can be adapted and implemented in developing countries like Ghana. I am particularly interested in studying global and other cross-national comparisons of alternative approaches to effectively teach mathematics. My experience with the Wayne State University’s Math Corps program during the Centre for Excellence in Mathematics (CEMATHS) maiden international conference in Ghana, in January of 2018, was very instrumental in shaping my research interest. For instance, during the breakout sessions, I observed Mr. X and Dr. Y of Wayne State University’s Math Corps program carry out a demonstration lesson where they taught mathematics using an approach that was relaxed yet engaged and challenging. This approach of teaching mathematics using songs, technology, jokes and getting students to teach other students was counter to the traditional approach of teaching mathematics used in Ghana. For example, in Ghana, mathematics teachers typically maintain a stern demeanor and, in my experience, related to students in a jovial or informal manner. Since adopting the Math Corps approach in my teaching, I have noticed very significant change in my students. The change in their disposition and attitude to the study of mathematics has been truly rewarding.
