Write a 10-item (minimum) Annotated Bibliography over your chosen topic. Your Annotated Bibliography will serve as the basis for your work for Essay 3 Researched Argument. For those 10 sources: No more than three of your sources may be “open web” sources–but this does not mean that you need any “open web” sources. Be judicious; use what you know about source evaluation to create your Annotated Bibliography of quality sources. Avoid these as research sources: dictionaries and encyclopedias (even online ones!), blogs, chat-room postings, wikipedia, quotation books or quotation websites. DO use the databases at your college (or the college of your choice) for the majority of your sources. (These are “closed web” sources–meaning you must have a password to find these sources! These are ALWAYS acceptable sources) There are two parts to each source on your Annotated Bibliography: a. The Citation Arrange your sources in alphabetical order by the last name of the author, or the title of the article if you have a source that does not list the author. b. The Annotation. The Writing Center reading about Annotated Bibliographies described several kinds of annotations (Summary, Indicative, Critical/Evaluative). You should be including both Summary and Critical/Evaluative in your annotations. Quality annotations must include this information: a brief summary of the thesis and key ideas of the source; an evaluation of the relevant evidence; an evaluation of the source for the author credibility and possible bias; drawing connections between one source and the others. an explanation of the usefulness of the source to your work; Don’t repeat information in the annotation that is evident from the citation. (For example, if your citation indicates that your author is writing for the New England Journal of Medicine, you don’t have to repeat that in the annotation!) Make your annotations usable for you, not for me. Do submit your Annotated Bibliography here and to Turnitin. Reminder Checklist 1. Capitalize the titles of articles correctly. Here are the rules: Capitalize the first and the last word. Capitalize nouns, pronouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs, and subordinate conjunctions. Lowercase articles (a, an, the), coordinating conjunctions, and prepositions. Lowercase the “to” in an infinitive (I want to play guitar). Here’s a tool to help you: Title Capitalization. (Links to an external site.) Do NOT use “all caps” for every word of the title (even if the original source did). 2. Put quotation marks around titles of articles in magazines, newspapers, journals. Put quotation marks around titles of webpages (not websites). 3. Italicize the titles of journals, databases, newspapers, websites 4. Do use reverse indention (also called “hanging indention”) 5. List your sources in alphabetical order by the last name of the author. If you have no author, use the title of the article (ignore “The,” however, if it begins the title. ) 6.
