TOPIC SELECTION: ***choose any one***
1.) “Heroes” is, nonetheless, an identity — that is given/titled to a person. Heroes themselves also have their own identity(ies). Construct an argument examining heroes and their identity(ies).
2. In the world of realism, some say that heroes do not exist. The subjects that realism portrays are everyday people, whether working class or middle class. They represent and capture the “real” world, the social world, and social life. Explain your opinion on the relationship between heroes and realism. Do we see heroes in realism texts? Do we see realism ideas in heroic films? What is the influence of the realistics seen in heroic films on the characteristics and images of heroes? And what is the value and influence of heroes in the real world?
3. In our heroism unit, we see some commonalities in characteristics in heroes as well as differences. We learned that there are so many different definitions of hero. In class, we questioned “what makes the heroes heroes?” And “what makes the villains villains?” What makes the definition of heroes complicated and why? What is the role of hero in the context of our modern society? Our judgement/recognition of heroes is closely related to historical issues, culture, religion, social class, etc., talk about your understanding of hero and heroism.
*****MY ASSIGNED TWO FILMS – Film: Spider-Man (2002) , Film: First Blood (1982)*****
-Your final paper invites you to think deeply, carefully and write about TWO texts/films of your choice from all the texts/films that we have studied this semester.
-The aim of this paper is to get you to concentrate on very specific portions of those texts/films, and to explore how bringing these texts together suggest one common idea or contrasting ideas that your paper will excavate. This is not, therefore, a paper that generally discusses these texts, but instead one that is based in close reading.
-You have the option to write a compare and contrast paper or one that has the ideas or images of one text illuminate the other.
-Your paper should have a clear and profound argument, and should quote and analyze portions of the texts/films. Your topic and thesis should come out of a close engagement with a small portion(s) of the text; make sure there is an analysis of the details of language and concepts in particular passages.
-Secondary/outside research and articles should NOT be used for this paper.
