Case Scenario:

A 75-year-old male had an office visit with his primary care provider (PCP). During his visit he told his doctor that he was have severe back pain for the past couple week. He has a history of kidney stones. His urinalysis identified micro-hematuria.

The PCP has order an abdominopelvic CT scan without contrast (kidney stone protocol). The PCP informs the technologist that the patient may leave the medical center and someone will call him with the results.

During the patient-care and exam set-up the technologist notices the patient is uncomfortable. He has a difficultly lying down on the scanner table. The technologist provides the patient with a positioning sponge under his knees to decrease back pain.

The scanning starts above the diaphragm and moves distal through the pelvis. As the images render on the computer screen the technologist notes there are dark spots throughout the vertebrae and few within the liver. In addition, there is a small white density within the left proximal ureter.

After the exam, the technologist takes the patient back to the PCP to receive the results.

Questions:
