For this discussion, as an alternative to a threaded text-based discussion, we are using video. Video discussions allow for enhanced engagement and practice articulating concepts and ideas from a personal perspective. FlipGrid provides an accessible (Links to an external site.) and mobile-friendly experience that allows for video captioning. It also allows you to set a time limit to elicit a focused and concise discussion.

You will need to read the listening chapter found in this module to accurately complete this discussion. Students will reflect on the listening chapter and evaluate their own listening. Students will find someone that they have a hard time listening to possibly for various reasons like history, culture, perception, background, environment, etc. Whether it is a co-worker, family member, old friend, choose someone that you find it difficult to listen to. View this as a learning experience, not to prove a point. You will have a conversation with that person virtual or by phone due to COVID19. The conversation does not have to be long. You will let the person do most of the talking because your goal is to listen even when it is takes much effort.
1. Have a conversation with someone you find it hard to listen to. Note: Do not record the conversation.
2. Reflect on the conversation and record your response to the following questions on Flipgrid.
3. Respond to two or more of your classmates’ videos.
You can summarize the conversation, but focus on answering the questions below when you record.
Make sure to include in your response:
a) What were the listening barriers?
b) What context did the communication take place in?
c) What type(s) of listening did you perform throughout the conversation?
b) Evaluate yourself and determine if you need to make improvements.
