The Canterbury Tales,a frame-tale poem, employs an extraordinary range of possible tales and taletellers. These diverse pilgrims reflect the range of medieval life. The pilgrims are, in a way, types or ideals of each manner of life, but each teller is also an individual, characterized as such not only in “The General Prologue” but also in the manner in which each tale is told.“The Wife of Bath’s Tale,” for instance, employs a sketch of a character that is well-developed: she has elements of romance, such as a knight, a happy ending, a fairy tale of a crone returning a young and beautiful woman. In addition, The “Wife of Bath‘s Tale” is controversial as it tells radical things like sex and power over men during the late Middle Ages. Thus, the tale introduces a woman who has been married five times, talks freely about radical things, and gets what she wants from men as she maintains complete and ultimate power over her five husbands.

Prompts: (CHOOSE ONE)

  1. How does experience help The Wife of Bath maintain power over her five husbands?

  1. How does Geoffrey Chaucer achieve his satiric project in The Canterbury Tales?

  1. What type of story does “The Wife of Bath’s Tale” present, and how does Chaucer become the great iconoclast of the patriarch through the image of this character, a woman of his creation, and why?

  1. Why do you think the lusty knight in “The Wife of Bath’s Tale” avoids punishment and is rewarded at the end?
