You only need to read part 1 of the poem
According to the speaker, why have the “best minds” of his generation “been destroyed by madness” (Line 1)? What types of things have they had to fight against and what has driven them “mad”?
Why would the speaker and his friends be living in “poverty” (4) and find themselves “expelled from the academies” (7)?
Why would the speaker say that he and his friends “had passed through universities…among the scholars of war” (6)? What does he mean by “passed through” and what or who are the “scholars of war”?
Although the speaker and his friends are in fear, they are also on a quest. What does it mean when the speaker says that they burned “for the ancient heavenly connection to the starry dynamo in the machinery of night” (3)?
In the 1950s, people had to hide drug use, homosexuality, bisexuality and promiscuity because society at this time demanded conformity and some of these acts were deemed illegal. The speaker explores the world he and his friends had to create to hide their behavior. In the poem, how does the speaker describe the effects of having to live one’s life in secret or in hiding? Consider lines 8-11 and 14-20.
Many of the Beat writers, including Ginsberg, felt an affinity with African American culture and jazz. What aspects of the poem have jazz rhythms or expressions?
Consider lines 13-15. Why might have Ginsberg chosen to make stark contrasts or juxtapositions with the images he uses, for example “backyard green tree cemetery dawns” (13)? Please explain and provide some examples.
As the poem continues, Ginsberg explores the travels of the Beats across the United States and parts of the world and discusses things that happened to them. Please read the rest of Part I. What are 2 places the Beats travel to that you find most intriguing? Why?
Do you consider “Howl” a poem? Why or why not? Did you like this poem? Why or why not?
