Directions: One of the main goals of this class is to introduce you to the use and analysis of primary sources in world history. You are also expected to be able to make meaningful comparisons between times and places to arrive at a more sophisticated understanding of historical processes and individuals.
Therefore, for this assignment you must
choose from one of the possible topics below
select a MINIMUM of three primary source documents from the relevant sections of EWC, your primary document reader (Chapters 14-32)
write a 1,000 word essay (about 3-4 pages) analyzing how the documents in question treat the topic you’ve selected
submit your assignment through Canvas.
You should begin your essay with a brief introduction that states your core argument or thesis and identifies the sources you’ll analyze. Feel free to contact your TA if you need help finding relevant documents.
For more on how to craft an argument, read this step-by-step tutorial on how to craft an argumentPreview the document.
Each body paragraph should begin with topic sentence. A topic sentence must make a claim that advances the core argument. Each paragraph should then present at least two pieces of evidence drawn from primary sources that support the paragraph’s claim. Remember to cite your sources appropriately (see examples below). Then analyze those pieces of evidence by explaining why they mean what you think they mean.
Finish your essay with a concluding paragraph that restates your core argument and reflects on its significance to world history.
