Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to practice/develop good document design principles and adapt messages to non-expert audiences. An effective document can make it easier for patients to act on medical advice, and for parents, students, and/or legislators to act on educational initiatives.
Audience: This assignment should be directed at a non-expert audience that you will interact with as a professional in your career, for example, patients or parents.
Deliverables: A ready-to-share infographic saved as a PDF and one page memo addressed to the person who would be the “gatekeeper” for sharing the information. If you are designing a poster to be displayed in an elementary school classroom, then the “gatekeeper” is the teacher.
Content/Subject: Your choice
I recommend that you create a infographic that you think could actually be shared in a physical or virtual space. For example, this could be printed and distributed at a PTA meeting, a doctor’s office, a health department website, etc. Be sure to take into account the layout (including placement of graphics and text), headers, spacing and typography for the document. You may use a template ONLY in so far as the template has a layout – but you should modify the template to reflect the organization that might actually use the material.
For nursing students, you could design an infographic that might be seen by patients in a specific clinic or hospital. For education students, you could likewise do your infographic or an issue or problem students face on a daily basis – or directed toward the parents/community as some larger societal concern. With your infographic you should attach a memo addressed to the “gatekeeper” (e.g. a school principal or hospital administrator) explaining why this document is needed and how it will be best used (e.g. displayed in a clinic waiting room, displayed in a classroom, passed out at a PTA meeting). The memo should be no more than one page.
Infographics are exactly what they say they are: information graphics and they marry data (numbers) with text and image. The numbers often are the focus of the story the infographic tells. You may use Word or PowerPoint to create your infographic. While I’d prefer that you not use a template of any kind, this assignment can be difficult, and to that end, I will allow you to use one of the tools below. It may be easier and less stressful for you.
