Capitalism is ingrained within our everyday lives. All of us are directly influenced by capitalism; we participate in the system as consumers and workers. With dramatic changes ahead such as our environmental crisis, volatile politics, and social unrest, we need to understand our relationship with capitalism in order to respond to our shifting world.

Our primary text that we will engage with is titled “Radical Minimalism: ‘Walden’ in the Capitalocene” by Michelle C. Neely. This text is packed with possibilities regarding inquiry within the text’s subtopics regarding capitalism and consumerism. From this text, you’ll contribute a new perspective from your subtopic in order to enter the larger academic conversation.

The analytical research essay asks us to initially withhold our interpretation and analysis per the essay’s exploratory structure. We must first frame our essay through an inquiry question on our subtopic in order to guide our research. From there, we will address why the subtopic and the inquiry question proves meaningful to learn about. Next, we will present what sources we found in our research, then describe and analyze that research. After that, we must wrestle with our interpretation of the texts and how we understand them. This section is where we will synthesize the sources and come to a thesis, or new perspective of the collected texts. Lastly, the conclusion is a space where we can “describe what [we’ve] come to understand about the [sub]topic that [we] didn’t fully appreciate when [we] began the project” (Ballenger 151). The conclusion is not a summation, but a place to reflect on what we learned through our inquiry. How did researching this subtopic change your perspective? What questions do you still have or would like to explore about your chosen subtopic?

Required Components:

  • A focused subtopic
  • Following the exploratory essay structure (please see Ballenger text on Moodle)
  • A clear inquiry question to introduce and frame your research
  • Quoting and engaging with the primary text “Radical Minimalism…” within the essay
  • A fluid thesis on how you have arrived to an understanding and interpretation of your research
  • A presence within your essay that shows the evolution of your understanding the subtopic and what you found (acknowledging preconceived ideas, withholding opinions, taking your research into account, analyzing and interpretating your newfound research per the exploratory essay structure)

Research Requirements:

  • Three academic sources (can include news articles)
  • Inclusion of the primary text (Neely’s “Radical Minimalism…”

Your Works Cited page should have a minimum of four sources (Neely text included).
