V. I will explain how with an increase in academic dishonesty and poor retention rates combined with the dependent nature of typical incoming freshmen, online education is not an environment in which a majority of traditional students can thrive.

BODY
I. IUPUI is transitioning to a more traditional student friendly university and it is time to mandate courses as to ensure success to each IUPUI student. IUPUI needs to adapt to a new majority of students. Upon the approval this past August of a request to build a new residence hall Chancellor Bantz stated that “Each year we continue to attract highly qualified, first-time full-time students, and we are seeing a significant increase in the number of students who desire an on-campus living experience in Indianapolis’ downtown. By creating a vibrant living and learning facility… we will enhance student learning, promote student development and success, and support IUPUI’s educational mission and goals (Request for New Residence Hall)” Clearly Bantz recognizes that a new majority is taking over the campus, the traditional freshman student. Soon IUPUI will be less of a commuter school and have a more traditional college campus. We need to adapt. A. Online education is not appropriate for traditional students due to their dependency. 1. According to Carron Jackson, author of “Online Learning vs. the Traditional College,” “Adult students are more likely to succeed in online education than a traditional college student because adult students have more maturity and responsibility. Traditional college students are between the age of 18-21 and benefit from the social atmosphere that a normal college campus provides. (Jackson).” 2. “Hand gestures, voice intonation, and facial expression, can all be very important in efficiently making [concepts] clear (Serlin.)” “The Advantages and Disadvantages of Online Courses,” an article written by Richard Serlin lists this idea as a main disadvantage. For the typical college freshmen an in person lecture can force the student to pay more attention and learn more material than an online course.

B.The effectiveness of online education is
hindered by an increase of academic dishonesty. 1. A stereotype surrounding online classes is that they are easier because there is less content to cover; however, the opposite is true. “The additional time and energy to complete assignments, loneliness, and lack of personal contact with professors and peers may encourage cheating (Sileo),” according to Jane Sileo author of “Academic Dishonesty and Online Classes: A Rural Education Perspective.” 2. As seen on Cornell University’s Online Learning website a student “should plan to spend at least 37.5 hours viewing lectures when taking an online course (Frequently Asked Questions).” 3. The perception of cheating varies greatly between in person and online courses. Deborah Raines, author of “Cheating in Online Courses: The Student Definition” surveyed over one thousand students with varying majors, class levels, and ages. In this study “more than one-third of respondents did perceive cheating as a way of achieving success” in online course work. Students in online courses were less likely to retain information as their primary goal was receiving a desirable letter grade (Raines).

C. Retention and graduation rates are very poor when it comes to online education.
1. According to Michael Herbert, chair of the criminal justice department of Bemidji State University, “failed retention rate for online courses [are] 10 to 20% higher than traditional classroom environments (Herbert).” Serlin believes that a key reason of the lower retention rates is because of “the flow of the discussion is slower… [and] is harder to keep well ordered (Serlin).” This statistic is for students in a majority of in person courses. What about students in most or all online courses? 2. The graduation rates of the University of Phoenix Indianapolis Campus (an entirely online college), as seen on College Results Online, is quite shocking. Only 7.7% of students graduate from their program after five years, with 0% graduating within four years (University of Phoenix). 3. Sue Wheeler, former President of Indianapolis Colleges for Adults Network informed me that “in 2010 Carrier United Technology Corp stopped reimbursing their employees who were attending University of Phoenix and DeVry University because of low completion rates amongst Carrier employees across the United States (Wheeler).”

Transition | A simple ban on emails, though not the same as online education, is quite similar. Relying on technology for a university education hinders a student’s success. | |
Satisfaction Step
|
A. IUPUI needs to place holds on online courses so as to not allow traditional students to take such courses until their first summer session.
B. Spring-Serenity Duvall, a faculty member at Salem College installed a policy of “No emails—unless scheduling an in-person meeting.” In response to this policy “students came to class better-prepared and wrote better papers.” Students also “gave the course better evaluations than previous cohort, and rated Duvall’s concern for their progress and efforts to make herself available as ‘excellent (Straumsheim).’” Students were more proactive with their assignments causing them to be more successful in the course.

Visualization Step
|
III. If my proposed solution, of restricted online courses until the first summer session for traditional freshman students, is implemented IUPUI will see many benefits.
A. IUPUI will be better adapted for the new majority of students. Students will benefit from a decrease in academic dishonesty, higher retention and graduation rates. B. Just think, lower tuition costs from not having to retake courses with higher graduation rates in less time.

Conclusion
I. We can make a change. Email the registrar in favor of banning online courses until the first summer session for traditional freshmen students. Express your concerns about online education in course evaluations and spread awareness about this issue. II. Online education decreases a traditional freshmen’s success. Online education increases academic dishonesty, yet decreases retention and graduation rates. Online education is not ideal for traditional students, IUPUI’s upcoming new majority. We can make a change. Share your concerns. III. While many of you aren’t freshman or traditional students, we all have IUPUI in common. To ensure IUPUI’s future academic success, we must act now. |
