Literature analysis

One critical moment in Yonnondio occurs when Mazie realizes that her mother is an individual, apart from her relationship to her husband and to her children; when the family is out gathering dandelions, Mazie notices that a “remote, shining look was on her [mother’s] face, as if she had forgotten them, as if she had become someone else, was not their mother any more” (144). For this week’s forum post, compare and/or contrast this moment with a moment from at least one text assigned this week. For example, with reference to Yamamoto’s story, “Seventeen Syllables,” you may wish to compare/contrast the “silences” in both texts; who is silent, and what are the reasons for their silence? In Yamamoto’s story, or in Brooks’ poem, “a song in the front yard,” do we ever see mothers or daughters struggle against silences or inherited conventions? In Rich’s poem, “Aunt Jennifer’s Tiger,” what is the (implicit) relationship between the speaker and Aunt Jennifer? In your responses, feel free to lead into discussion of texts from previous weeks that we haven’t discussed at length.
