Purpose: Using indirect calorimetry, oxygen consumption, heart rate and rating of perceived exertion will be measured in a test subject while performing set work on a cycle ergometer.  Through data collection, the class will make the determination of where and when oxygen deficit and steady state occur in the subject during the exercise sets.  An understanding of energy transition will be applied as well as a determination of overall fitness when comparing both subjects.

Equipment:  1 Polar Heart Rate Monitor; 1 Monark Cycle Ergometer; RPE chart; 1 stop watch; metronome; Korr Metabolic Cart

Methods & Procedures:

  1. 1 subject will be observed; 1 tester monitors heart rate; 1 tester monitors workload & RPE; 1 person records HR & VO2 data each minute; 1 person keeps the time.

  1. Obtain your subject’s demographic information (height, weight, age etc.)

  1. Set the subject up on the bike.

  1. Have the subject rest for a couple of minutes and record a resting heart rate & VO2.

  1. Subject performs a light warm up @ .5 kp (150 kgm/ 25 watts); 50 rpm (metronome :100 clicks/min) for 2 minutes.

  1. Adjust resistance to 1st work rate: 1.5 kg (450 kgm’s/ 75 Watts); 50 rpm & record heart rate and VO2 @:45 sec. of each minute for 5 minutes.

  1. At the end of 5 minutes, increase work rate to 3 kp (900 kgm’s / 150 Watts); 50 rpm. Record heart rate and VO2 @:45 sec. of each minute for 5 minutes.

  1. Subject cool down @ .5 kp (150 kgm’s; 25 watts) until heart rate goes under 100 bpm.

  1. Graph the minute to minute heart rates and VO2’s vs. time for each work load.

Questions for Discussion:

  1. What is O2 deficit? What is Steady State?

  1. Explain when your subject (time in minutes) was in the oxygen deficit stage during the first workload and second workload respectively. WHY?

  1. Describe the energy transition (nutrients and energy systems used) as well as the dynamic changes taking place in central (Q) and peripheral (circulatory and muscle (cell)) for the subject during the oxygen deficit stage.

  1. Explain if and when (time) your subject hit steady state during the first and second work rate respectively. WHY? Justify your findings with physiological support.

  1. Describe what is going on with energy transition and acute adaptations in central and peripheral function to permit for steady state to occur in the subject.

**6.  Graph heart rates vs. Time & Workload. Graph VO2 vs. Time & Work load.   Label:  O2 Deficit, & Steady state **PLACE GRAPHS IN RESULTS SECTION
