The subjects we have covered in class are not abstract; they shape peoples’ everyday experiencesand they are depicted in the arts. You need to find and view anon-documentaryfilm with astrong urban-basedtheme and interpret it in light of the classreadings andclasslectures. While you will want to provide a brief summary of the storyline or opinionabout the film, your primaryassignment is to show howthe readings have helpedyou understand the experiences of the film’s charactersand story.This may include or relate toissues like settlement patterns, urbanization, urbanism, urban design, urban form, racial orethnic conflict, community formation, economic restructuring, consumerism, the gendering of space, segregation, or suburbanization, to name a few. Youshould take notes as you view thefilm; be especially careful to note things in the landscape, dialogue,and action. After, or during,the film you shouldconsult your lecture notesand, in particular, thecourse readings. Your review mustinclude explicit reference toat least four (or more, preferably) class readings. You must use relevantquotes or ideas from these readingsin your analysis of your chosen film. For some films, you will want to read ahead in the assigned readingsto find the most relevant ones.Typically,students includereferencesto more than the number of required readings.
