General Information

Style, says Steven Pinker, is “the effective use of words to engage the human mind”.Great writing has style in addition to a strong argument.

Task

Choose a topic/area that is of interest to you within you field of study. Write a sentence that comes down on one side of an issue or debate within that area. For example: the topic could be Programming Languages and the declarative sentence is “Young programmers should learn Python.” You are then to write a persuasive paper by presenting your argument and supporting it with external sources.

Steps

• Select a topic. All topics must be approved by the instructor.
• You will craft an argument/thesis statement. It should include both a topic and a controlling idea. (Share with instructor before proceeding.)
• Complete academic research, finding a minimum of two sources to help you build a discussion about your argument.
• Be sure that you explore all sides of the issue. Don’t go into this report with your mind made up: stay open to the possibility that you may learn something new!

Requirements

• The paper should have a clear introduction, contextualizing the issue and providing your argument.
• The body should have at least two clear arguments laid out with supporting evidence.
• A short conclusion that wraps up your argument and reiterates your main points.
• Use a minimum of two supporting sources and include APA citations
• Length: two to threedouble-spaced pages (500-750 words)
