It may be required as part of the job application process. If it’s optional, including a cover letter is the best way to pitch your case for an interview. www.euruni.edu HOW TO WRITE A COVER LETTER 1. No more than one page. 2. Focus on them (company culture, their vision, new product areas, etc.) 3. Focus on what they are looking for and how you are the solution, for example: An Executive for the sales dept. is looking for a new assistant– you used to work in a sales dept and are familiar with this department’s inner workings. 4. Style & format should match your resume/CV 5. Address it directly to the hiring manager 6. Add some accomplishments (bullet points), but not all. www.euruni.edu CREATING A CV! Do’s: 1. include all important info such as contact details 2. description of your tasks & your achievements 3. brief explanation of any gap 4. language skills/cultural skills 5. extra info that is relevant – certificates, coaching, mentoring, volunteer 6. Put your name and contact info on second page header if you go over one page www.euruni.edu CREATING A CV! Don’ts: 1. Put contact info or name in TEXT BOXES 2. Leave a half page – make sure all pages are full 3. Write in first person – use 3rd person 4. Use the same verbs over and over for job descriptions 5. Mix spacing between sections/fonts/etc. – it should look uniform Open “Sample Resume” on the moodle for the next slides: www.euruni.edu SAMPLE SECTIONS – HEADLINE GOES UNDER YOUR NAME & CONTACT INFO Give yourself a title – one that shows what you do and how you do it – for example “Engaging Content Creator” or ”B2B Sales Strategist” or “Expert Team Leader” www.euruni.edu SAMPLE SECTIONS – BIO GOES UNDER YOUR CONTACT INFO – BEFORE SKILLS Your intro should be short, 3rd person and tell them enough to get them interested to read the rest of your document. No more than 4 lines Highlight your top skills (both technical and soft) www.euruni.edu SAMPLE SECTION – SKILLS GOES IN THE TOP 1/3 OF YOUR RESUME! Highlight your strengths: Education, soft skills (teamwork, communication, explaining complex things, closing deals, sales, etc.), flexibility, motivation/potential for development (fast learner, willingness to learn, good at adapting to new situations, internalize new content quickly, great team player, strong communicator, international study experience, working on multi-cultural teams, thrives in challenging environments, and so on. www.euruni.edu WORK EXPERIENCE CHRONOLOGICAL FROM MOST RECENT TO OLDEST – GIVE DATES, JOB TITLE, COMPANY, & BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES & ACCOMPLISHMENTS Stay away from words like “responsibilities were, or duties were” – use more action verbs, i.e.: Spearheaded, led, managed, conceived, crafted, in charge of, etc. www.euruni.edu THE APPENDIX – AVAILABLE ON REQUEST! 1. Visual element – cover of magazine you were one, brochure you created, etc. 2. References from former boss 3. References from previous colleagues and industry contacts (can be taken from LinkedIn). 4. Publications 5.
