The High Fashion Industry and its Relationship with Globalization

My research paper will assess the relationship between the high fashion industry and globalization. High, or luxury, fashion is an internationally recognized industry. On one hand, many agree that the high fashion industry prioritizes several underlying values such as “culture and meaningful global artistry” (Paul, 2018). Fashion weeks are held all around the world promoting unity among several diverse groups, illustrating “the structural interconnectedness between art and capitalism in the global fashion industry, together with the drive of the socialist ideology of the public ownership” (Wang, 2020). On the other hand, environmentalists argue that the fashion industry could be improved “by using more sustainable materials, as well as reducing waste in the production process and increasing the number of recycled items” (Godart, 2015). Another controversy being the use of animals in order to profit off their bodily resources. Popular labels such as Gucci and Louis Vuitton use real animal skins such as leather and fur. Sanders claims that “no amount of money or fashion statement is worth the death of millions of animals every year” (Sanders, 2017). My research paper will analyze these two arguments.
