Outline
My research paper will assess the relationship between the high fashion industry and modern globalization. Scholars and activists seem to have a completely different opinion regarding the effects of the globalization process on the world of luxury fashion. Consequently, my research question will ask: What impact does modern globalization have on the institution of high fashion?
First Theme: History of luxury fashion expansion
According to the (Fashion Institute of Technology, 2017), the expansion of high fashion trends began in medieval Europe during the 14th century. Others have argued that the industry did not begin globalization until much later (Evans, 2008). This section of my research paper will evaluate the disputes about the beginning of global luxury fashion expansion.
Second Theme: Effectiveness of globalizing high fashion
Some insist that the implementation of the globalization process upon the high fashion industry has promoted both unity and diversity, (Paul, 2018; Wang, 2020). On the other hand, animal rights activists and environmentalists alike argue that luxury fashion promotes inhumane treatment of innocent creatures and is unsustainable, (Godart, 2015; Sanders, 2017). This portion of the paper will assess the debates regarding the impact(s) of the global expansion of high fashion.
Third Theme: Role of politics in globalizing the industry
Many assert the relevance of “the structural interconnectedness between art and capitalism in the global fashion industry, together with the drive of the socialist ideology of the public ownership” (Wang, 2020). Others argue that international high fashion shows and the like have allowed activist expression through design and modeling (Gaugele&Titton, 2019). The last theme of the paper will address these arguments made concerning global politics and high fashion.

Evans argues that the globalization of luxury fashion design, production and distribution did not begin until the late 1800s. This article is full of information about the rise of major fashion designers and early modeling, which will assist me in forming an argument about the rise of globalizing luxury fashion.
Fashion Institute of Technology NYC. 1300-1349. (2017, September 11). Retrieved October 25, 2020, from https://fashionhistory.fitnyc.edu/1300-1349/
This article summarizes the emergence of luxury within the fashion world in medieval Europe during the 14th century. The Fashion Institute of Technology claims that high fashion was initially spread throughout Europe, which began the industry’s globalization. This will help me to form an argument regarding the history of global fashion.
Gaugele, E., &Titton, M. (2019, November 05). Elke Gaugele. Retrieved October 25, 2020, from https://mitpress.mit.edu/contributors/elke-gaugele
Authors Guaguele and Titton discuss the role of politics within the global fashion industry. They highlight the emergence of activism through fashion expression. Major high fashion labels and models have been able to silently take their stance on things like feminism and the LGBTQ community through fashion expression. My paper can use this article to help me discuss the political effects of globalizing the fashion industry.
Godart, F., Globe”, G., Shilkaren, Buddy, Wideboygeorge, Susu, & Chris. (2015, May 29). Three Ways Luxury Fashion Can Be Sustainable. Retrieved October 01, 2020, from https://knowledge.insead.edu/responsibility/three-ways-luxury-fashion-can-be-sustainable-4067
This article highlights the potential for sustainability within the high fashion industry. Godart urges designers to work towards creating clothing with a lasting appeal rather than clothing that quickly goes out of season. He also suggests increased usage of recycled items during the production process. This information is helpful because it helps me form an argument supporting environmentalists and activists in relation to global fashion production.
Sanders, S. (2017, September 13). High fashion brands in hot water for animal cruelty. Retrieved October 01, 2020, from https://xaviernewswire.com/2017/09/13/high-fashion-brands-in-hot-water-for-animal-cruelty/
Sanders brings to attention the inhumane treatment of animals by major fashion businesses all over the world in order to profit off of their skin and fur. This article addresses what luxury labels, like Gucci and Michael Kors, don’t want the public to know. This article will help me to form an argument against the use of real animal fur and skin within the fashion industry.
Skylar De Paul | Senior Staff, & Paul, S. (2018, September 28). San Francisco Fashion Community Week highlights unity and diversity. Retrieved October 01, 2020, from https://www.dailycal.org/2018/09/27/sf-fashion-community-week-unity-diversity/
This article summarizes San Francisco Fashion Week, just one of the many fashion shows held internationally. The author indicates the importance of diversity and unity within the fashion industry, building a sense of community. This article is helpful because it will help me form an argument in favor of luxury fashion, showing how it brings diverse groups of people together.
Wang, Z. (2020, January 01). Shanghai Fashion Week: A Socially Engaging Mass Entertainment with a Professional Infrastructure: Semantic Scholar. Retrieved October 01, 2020, from https://www.semanticscholar.org/paper/Shanghai-Fashion-Week:-A-Socially-Engaging-Mass-a-Wang/7e1a87058ff4904cc30f2bb91a844e9f1aa9adf0
Wang describes how politics have influenced the fashion industry, specifically Shanghai Fashion Week. China’s socialist ideals have impacted the production and distribution of clothing and other fashion items. The author also points out the relation between art and capitalism. This perspective will help me to describe the importance of both culture and trade within the fashion industry.
