The purpose of this paper is to understand and explore equality and equity in education in depth, as they pertain to The United States educational system.

This paper will provide you with an opportunity to:

  • understand equality and equity in education
  • perform hands on research
  • analyze issues of equality as they relate toa U.S. school that is meaningful or personally relevant to you
  • Apply theoretical concepts to practical analysis, making connections from our readings to every-day life
  • Create a tool to effectively share your findings with others

Guidelines:

  1. Read over the sections of the textbook (in particular,chapters7 and 8) which discuss equity and equality. Then read over the following articles for additional information and perspectives.
  1. Research a school, that is meaningful or relevant to you personally. You may want to choose one that you attended as a child, one located in your area, or a CUNY school. The following websites may help you in your search for information about the demographics of the school:
    1. org
    2. National Center for Education Statistics (https://nces.ed.gov/ccd/schoolsearch/index.asp) (K-12)
    3. College Factual (https://www.collegefactual.com/colleges/) (College)
    4. National Center of Education Statistics: College Navigator (https://nces.ed.gov/collegenavigator/) (College)

If the school you’ve chosen has a website, you may be able to get information directly from the school site. In order to get a comprehensive understanding of equity at your school, please compile relevant information regarding equity, diversity (racial and gender), socio-economic status, graduation rates, grades, poverty, disability, etc. Your goal is to discover how this school addresses issues of equity.

  1. Here is your opportunity to be creative. Create an infographic or poster that addresses the major sociological issues related to education equity at your school. You may choose to create this using Word, as a PowerPoint slide, or to use another program of your choice (Easelly (https://www.easel.ly/home), or Pik to Chart (https://piktochart.com/) for example).

What information should you include on your poster? You can either choose one issue related to education such as gender diversity and explore it in depth, or you can look at multiple issues relating to educational equity. Consider which data points are necessary to create a comprehensive picture of the issue/s related to equity in the school. Are these issues being addressed? If so, how?  Focus on a few pieces of data about your school and use graphics to draw attention to the key points.

  1. Finally, write up your research. Briefly describe the difference between equity and equality. How are these concepts relevant to your school? How well is your school performing in terms of each? What are the major key issues? Have any initiatives been put into place (if so, which)? Which areas need improvement? What initiatives might you recommend helpingfoster greater equity in your school? Include references and citations where appropriate.

The paper should begin with a brief introductory paragraph/s and end with a concluding paragraph/s. Please be sure to include a Works Cited page (Internet resources and our text should be sufficient) at the end of your paper.  The paper should be 3-4 pages in length (12-point font), double spaced with standard one-inch margins.
