Training Nursing Skills

Students will submit a 700-1050 word (approx. 2-3 pages) draft during Week 2, 3, and 4. Drafts will be in APA 6th edition format (title page, abstract, body, and references) and answer specific questions that pertain to the components of a research study (see Research Critique Paper guidelines below). Papers will be returned weekly with written feedback by the instructor about appropriateness and clarity of the response and whether the correct APA format was met. Students will utilize the knowledge obtained from the course and the instructor’s comments to combine the previous 3 weekly drafts into a final 2100-2800 word (approx. 6-8 pages) critique.

The Researcher

Who is the researcher?

What qualifies him/her to undertake the study?

Who sponsored the research and/or provided sources of funding?

The Title

Is the title of a reasonable length? Clear? Concise?

Are the important study variables mentioned in the title? If so, what are they?

Does the title suggest the population under investigation? If so, who

The Problem Statement

Was the problem statement clearly stated?

In your judgment, is the study significant to nursing practice? State your rationale.

What are the research variables, and are research variables explained?

Does the problem meet the criterion of research ability? If so, state how. If not, why not?

Protection of Human Rights

Were the rights of subjects observed? Did the researcher address any ethical concerns?

Did the researcher(s) clearly state that one or more Institutional Review Boards approved the study? What organization(s) was the IRB’s affiliated with?

If not stated that the research received approval from an IRB, what are your thoughts regarding the absence of approval?

What suggestions would you make to strengthen the protection of the subjects?

Purpose of the study

What did the researcher intend to study?

Is the purpose statement clearly stated or described? Provide a rationale for your statement

Review of the Literature

Are the articles relevant to the problem?

Are the researcher’s literature sources:

Is the review merely a summary of past work or does it critically appraise and compare the contributions of key studies?
