The decriminalization of marijuana in Canada

Write an essay in which you will trace back the criminalization history of marijuana in Canada. Your essay will expose the role and the reasons invoked by the RCMP, which maintained a strong opposition against any attempt of decriminalizing marijuana for recreational purposes. Since Fall 2018, the use of marijuana for recreational use is legal. According to our Prime Minister, Canada’s previous system did not work. It did not prevent young people from using marijuana and too many Canadians ended up with criminal records for possessing small amounts of the drug. Moreover, prosecuting these offenses was expensive and created a logjam in our criminal justice system. At the same time, the proceeds from the illegal drug trade supported organized crime and formed greater threats to public safety. Are Trudeau’s arguments valid? Are there other reasons for legalizing marijuana? What will or should happen to those with previous possession convictions? Did we take the right decision? Justify your position.
