– I attach the instructions for the task and below I will explain them. Before, anything think about two things:

 

  1. What will I be teaching? (English? Or Maths in English?- theses two are different and measuring language learning is easier if it is just an English class). If you choose to teach Maths/Science you will need to research in what is called the CLIL research.
  2. What theories did I enjoy, understand and would like to implement in the class? This then makes it easy to design the class and also to write the essay later.

 

Now the task asks you the following (my remarks are in red):

 

EDC341 Lesson planning & rational assessment instructions (20%)

 

You need to:

  1. Design a language teaching lesson plan (L2 English for Arabic L1 students) for a 1-day period for Grade 3 class.(8 year olds)
  • What part of language are you teaching? (adjectives, nouns, past tense)
  • How will you break up the session? Will you have teaching, then activity, then play then?
  • What activities will you add?
  • What resources will you use? Computer, smart board, games…
  • Do you need to use technology?
  • How will you ensure you address differentiation? Will your class assistant be with students who ned extra help, in reading for example? Or will you make all the group work together but give those students who need time homework (e.g. activities to do at home?).
  • How are you measuring meta-linguistic awareness? Do your activities get students to make past tense verbs, or nouns, or play games that show they understand how language works?
  • What 3 questions will you ask students (to ensure they understand the concept(s)?) These can be simple to just see did they understand what you were teaching them?
  1. Then write a small theoretical essay/rationale to support their design choices. (1,000 words maximum with 5 references)
  • What theories are you using to plan the session? Constructivism? Behaviourism? Audiolingual aspects? Sociocultural theories? Cognitive theories? You can combine more than one.
  • How will you deal with errors? (see last week’s chapter and also the videos I put up on Bb)
  • How will you accommodate corrective feedback? What type of corrective feedback?  (see videos on Bb).
  • What type of classroom environment are you creating? Structure-based instruction? Communicative instruction? (see the PDF I attached yesterday and later this week, the PPT I will use in the live class).

Consult chapters 4,5 and 6 in the course textbooks or similar material. (theses are the last 3 PDFs you have been reading in weeks 10, 11 and the one I attached yesterday).

 

So you can break all this up into small bits to do, you have the time and we will be able to complete this on time and hand it in. I am confident in you. You are competent and able to write this up. I hope this helps and we will have time to discuss all these soon. Don’t worry, just take this time to review everything you have learned so far.
