Hello everyone,

For this post I’ve decided to discuss viruses. Viruses like common colds, influenza, chickenpox, HIV, SARS-CoV-2 and others are tiny, infectious particle that can reproduce only by infecting a host cell. Viruses can affect areas in the body, including the respiratory, reproductive, and gastrointestinal systems. Depending on their host, viruses can be classified into three types, animal viruses, plant viruses, and bacteriophages. Viruses are not alive, they do not have cells, they cannot turn food into energy, and without a host they are just inert packets of chemicals. However, viruses aren’t dead either. They have genes, they reproduce, and they evolve through natural selection. For most viral infections can only be treated to help with symptoms while you wait for your body to fight off the virus. Antibiotics do not work for viral infections. Vaccines can help prevent you from getting many viral diseases.

Hi Everyone,

Specimen collection is a process of getting tisse or fluid samples for lab analysis or for patient testing. Specimen collection is withdrawing blood, spinal fluid, swabbing mucosal surfaces or collecting urine samples. When gathering specimen collections, aseptic techniques are used to avoid contaminating the sample with body fluids or bacteria. Most clinical labs accept samples from: virology swabs, serum, cerebrospinal fluid, urine, blood, and tissue. Samples are collected in containers that are specific for lab processing. With specimen collection it’s important that the labels are correct before they are sent to the lab. Also making sure that the samples are for the right patient is very impotant as well.

Hi Professor and Class,

Agglutination tests differ than the precipitation tests in that agglutination tests differ in size, solubility, and the location of the antigen. In agglutinatin tests, the antigens that are tested are whole cells. Agglutination is visible to the eye because clumping occurs when the antibodies and the antigens mix. Agglutination tests mostly involve whole cells like red blood cells as these tests are used to differentiate between ABO and Rh blood types. These tests are used by blood banks to determine a specific blood type for transfusions. For the agglutination tests, antisera contains certain antibodies to be tested against the antigens with a sample of blood to be able to see if any clumping occurs.

An example of a tube agglutination test is the Widal test. The Widal test is able to agglutinate to cells of S. typhi, which is responsible for causing typhoid fever. There are several other tests as well that are very helpful today, such as the rapid plasma reagin (RPR), the cold agglutinin test, and the Weil-Felix reaction test. The RPR is used to test for syphilis. The cold agglutinin test is used to determine whether a person has Mycoplasma pneumonia as the antibodies are tested at low temperatures and see if there is a reaction. The Weil-Felix reaction test is used to diagnose rickettsial infections in people. A different type of agglutination test is a latex agglutination test, which agglutinating antigens stick to the surface of a nonmoving particle, these are mainly seen to test for pregnancy hormones in urine, Candida yeasts, staphylococci, streptococci, and more. Agglutination tests are actually extremely important and are used a lot to test many different things that are very much needed to be tested for nowadays.
